If the #23 pick can't be used in a trade-up for a premium QB in the 2024 Draft, then that trade with HOU is starting to lose more and more value by the day...
Prior to the trade, the Vikings had the 42nd pick in Rd 2 in 2024 and their Rd 2 pick in 2025...I'm not seeing a massive difference in the IOL/DT prospects available at #23 than those who could be available at #42. At IOL, you might be talking Graham Barton (playing all 3 interior spots) and possible Powers-Johnson vs Cooper Beebe/Zach Frazier and at IDL it's Jer'Zhan Newton/Darius Robinson vs Kris Jenkins.
If we're not going to use #23 in some fashion to acquire more Day 2 capital this year or use it in conjunction for a premium QB prospect (probably Maye), then the prospect at #23 would not only have to be a better quality player across 4 years than what you could have acquired at #42, that prospect would also have to be better than what we could have acquired in Rd 2 next year - or what that Rd 2 2025 asset could have been used for in trade value (ie, if a high-profile CB like L Sneed becomes available again next offseason).
In 2022, Kwesi moved down from #12 to #32 for only a 3rd and moving up 12 spots in the 2nd round. Abysmal value compared to precedent (should have picked up a 2nd or a future 1st) and that's not even referencing the failure of all picks in that trade.
Not trading Hunter for a 2023 2nd rounder plus more, depending on what you believe they turned down. Could have powered a trade-up, and moving Hunter possibly loses this team another game with zero talent at the edge position, moving the Vikings up to around a #6 pick or so.
Moving up 19 picks from #42 to #23 for at the cost of a future 2nd (which is likely to be in the top half). Quite pricey when you consider how flippantly they moved down in 2022 - and they don't know who will be available at #23.
They really have to get this right.
Agreed on all counts. I do think the ability to add a difference making defensive player is vastly different at 23 vs 42 from my terrible mock drafting! Probably not worth next years second level difference but it’s significant in my opinion.
I’m going to assume they trade up until anything else actually plays out. I think someone bites on them overpaying for Drake/JJ.
