The Vikings filled their two biggest holes on the team in defense at the edge and their three biggest holes on offense at RB, LG, and QB. They improved significantly at MLBer too, but at this point this team doesn't feel like it is actually better than it was last year. Ignoring the draft for now where a good chunk of the draft is going to go to acquiring a QB, what moves can the Vikings make in free agency to actually improve the team?
First off, they need to do something with Harrison Smith. He makes way too much money for what he brings and there are options who are better, cheaper and younger available in free agency. Signing Justin Simmons for what they would save cutting Smith improves the team.
Sign Connor Williams. His injury means he will come cheap, but it also means he probably won't be starting week 1. With how hesitant teams are to make changes mid-season on the Oline, any signing of Williams might be for 2025, not 2024, but I make that investment for a guy as good as he is. Whether it is to take over for Bradbury at center or Brandel at LG, he is an instant significant upgrade over what we have right now.
Sign DJ Reader to shore up the interior. Putting him on the defensive line with Van Ginkel and Greenard would actually make our dline better, something the Vikings haven't really done yet with the moves so far. We would need to act fast though, as he heads to the Lions for a visit this week.
Sign CJ Henderson to add some depth to the secondary. He fits the mold of what Kwesi likes, a player drafted really high who hasn't lived up to his draft position. Worth taking a shot on Flores being able to fix him for what we will probably have to pay to get him.
Those are my next moves if I am the Vikings' GM. What are yours?
