I think that's part of it, we basically haven't traded any veterans when they had the chance to. No build-up of draft capital outside of the calamitous trade-down in the 2022 draft. While many veterans were replaced, many were kept longer than necessary - see Thielen and Smith's restructures in 2022 that have made it more difficult to release them.
And I think people associate a team building a core of young players and we don't have that outside of a few hits. We basically have to build our roster back up via free agency, which is something you don't associate with rebuilding teams.
I agree, I pointed to something similar in another thread.
The team has added Hockenson/Addison/Pace as seemingly impact additions and one of those is a stretch. Most of the top players were already on the team when this regime took over, now they are just older. We are behind in picks instead of ahead. We added dead cap just to move on from a couple players anyways. I think when you look at where we are now we may be in a spot where we are eating cap, focused on the future a bit and may have a down season. There is simply no reason we needed to be 3 years in and still behind on cap and down on picks ready for a down year.
This all could have been accomplished year 1 while gaining assets along the way. We have heard talk about how hard it is to imagine wasting $ as a ticket holder on a down season. What about wasting it 4 straight years on a "lets patch up holes around Kirk" approach just to end up with no playoff wins and in the same spot as a true full rebuild from the start anyways? That's why many are upset with the direction taken and the execution of it. We are just wasting time for absolutely no reason other than staying "super competitive".
