What this increase really boosts for teams is the value of current contracts. For example, Metellus' $2.2M cap hit is not even that much over the veteran minimum at this point. Hockenson's $16.5M per year with this year's inflation factored in would be $18.5M! It also makes swallowing the amount $9M sunk into Mattison and Lowry easier to swallow.
Frankly this doesn't impact the Hunter/Cousins/Jefferson discussions as much. They were always going to get big money that would be pushed into 2025/2026/2027.
The cap is going to keep going up, so signing contracts now and not later is a wise strategy as deals can look team-friendly in hindsight once the cap continues to shoot upwards. So perhaps getting extensions done with the non-marquee players, say like with Cam Bynum and Harrison Phillips would be smart, like the Metellus move last year.
I think it’s another example of this FO/kwesi making some mistakes. The cost for JJ and Hunter if we choose to keep them probably increases a bit now as opposed to if we got those deals done early. If we move on then there was no reason not to trade Hunter at the deadline. It just seems like we continuously are making bad decisions because we have no real direction or plan. As you get at we did at least lock metellus up cheap but why not do that with others? Flexibility.
As much as we hear about flexibility with this competitive rebuild it keeps coming with a cost. Now we pay more for anyone that we sign long term this offseason because we kept flexibility instead of locking in. You have to make decisions eventually. Delaying the inevitable just wastes time. We need to choose an actual direction and stick with it.
