I do not understand the Hunt signing and then moving him to left guard. Has that ever worked?
Is it better to move Ingram to left guard?
I cant see paying 15M to an offensive lineman and asking him to switch sides. Maybe he played some left guard or tackle in college?
It is a large investment to make. I would rather use him at right guard for that money.
Guy has played his entire NFL career on the right side, and you pay him megabucks to switch sides?? Makes no sense to me, and is exactly the same crap that happened under the Zimmer/Spielman regime that had a lot of fans blowing up about.
Case in point: Ed Ingram. Played his entire college career on the left side and immediately asked to switch sides when arriving in Minnesota. He played poorly (surprise surprise) and a lot of folks labeled him a "bust" after only one season.
Mark is right, if you're doing this, Hunt has to play RG, but then Ingram has to change sides (again) so I don't see the point to this. If you want to fix the line, bring in a free agent LG instead of messing with the chemistry and playing musical chairs again.
Ah yes, the annual 'only Minnesota asks O-Linemen to switch spots' diatribe.
You know who else asks Collegiate and Professional Players to switch spots on the Offensive Line? Hint, it's 32 minus 1.
There literally isn't a single Team with a Starting 5 where every O-Lineman is playing either the position they took the most snaps at in the NCAA or previously in the NFL.
Why is that? In High School your best athletes on your O-Line start out at the Tackle positions. Because the size differential isn't big enough between your kids and you want the ones that are fast enough to protect your QB from, wait for it, speedy but undersized pass rushers at Edge.
As kids turn into young men they get bigger. Many that played Tackle in High School are forced to play Guard in College either because they didn't retain the athleticism required to stay at Tackle or they couldn't handle the increasing level of skill of their opponents.
What else happens in the NCAA? Teams field their best 5 Offensive Linemen. Meaning guys switch spots. All. The. Fukcing. Time. It's rare to find a draftable player who played the same position 3 years in a row in college, let alone always played thar spot all the way back to High School.
Fautanu is a great Collegiate Tackle. So is Barton. They will play Guard in the NFL. Because they should.
Vikings fans conflate overdrafting marginal to bad Offensive Linemen with the notion that asking one of them to switch spots is the sole reason they underperform.
The real reason they underperform is that they aren't that good. Robert Hunt is SIGNIFICANTLY better than Risner or Ingram. If Ingram can't move to LG you shouldn't ink Hunt? That's like saying 'we need a CB1 that can only cover Receivers on the left side of the field'.
Draft better players. Coach them up better. Those are the answers. Not being afraid to do something that 31 other Teams do every single freaking year.
