In the coming months leading up to free agency, you are going to read a lot about how the Vikings can keep everyone and still make some key free agent signings. Through the magic of cap manipulation, void years and back filled contracts, the Vikings can absolutely keep everyone and sign a free agent or two, but why stop there?
If we can throw all cap fiscal responsibility out the window, why hold ourselves to maintaining the status quo or barely improving? No, if we are going to pretend like the cap doesn't exist and that teams only adhere to it because they aren't as smart Rob Berzinsky, let's go all out.
First off, let's take care of our inhouse free agents and players who need to be extended.
Re-sign Danielle Hunter for 5 years/100 million
Extend JJ for 5 years/150 million
Re-sign Risner for 1 year/3 million
That's it, everyone else can go.
Next are the cuts.
Harrison Smith - saves 11.4 million
Dean Lowry - saves 2.1 million
The Vikings now have holes at DE/DT, OLB, Safety, WR3, QB1 but I am not stopping there.
Time to hit free agency.
DI Chris Jones - 5 years/150 million
OLB Chase Young - 2 years/25 million
Connor Williams - 3 years 36 million
Curtis Samuel - 2 years/ 22 million
Jameis Winston - 1 year/ 8 million
Antoine Winfield - 4 years/60 million
Here is the Viking's cap space over the next 4 years:
We still have cap to sign a CB like Chidube Awuzie, fill the kicker spot, add some depth and in 2025 there is enough cap to give Darrisaw his 5th year contract.
Viking's roster:
QB1 Winston/Rookie QB
RB1 Chandler/Rookie RB
WR1 JJ
WR2 Addison
WR3 Samuel
TE Hockenson
LT Darrisaw
LG Risner
C Williams (or Bradbury for the first part of the season if Williams isn't ready)
RG Ingram
RT O'Neil
LOLB Hunter
DE Jones
DT Phillips
ROLB Young
LB Pace
Safety1 Winfield
Safety2 Metellus
Safety3 Bynum
CB1 Blackmon/Evans
CB2 Murphy
The Oline's interior with Williams would be significantly better and I could do more here, but even when going all out I have a hard time investing too much on the interior of the Oline. Samuel adds a WR to the team that is actually a threat on those short screens. This is a top 5 offense if Winston works out and good enough where any but the worst rookie QB should succeed.
The defense has arguably the best dline in football and we have even improved the secondary quite a bit. This team as a whole has the potential to compete for a SB, and we haven't even added anyone via the draft yet.
