Not true. Minnesota can absolutely draft JJ McCarthy in the 2nd, stash him behind Cousins for 2 years and then offer him a Team-friendly extension before he becomes the Starter. The 'Jordan Love' plan.

I suppose if you think we can develop McCarthy into Love. I'm not sold on Love just yet personally, and I think McCarthy is going to need a couple years, so I'd probably look a little higher on the food chain at say a Nix/Penix type, both of whom would be available at 11 and later. I like sitting a QB year 1, but doing so year 2 in my opinion just isn't a good idea, so I'd argue it's a good time to make the move. And those numbers for Kirk are hard to swallow.

I'm on record saying I'd offer Kirk the exact same deal he offered Kwesi last year: 2 years, 75 million fully guaranteed. Not one penny more. He can have a fake Year 3 if he wants, but it's essentially a 2 year deal.

And Penix & Nix need to start at some point in Year 1. McCarthy needs at least a year and a half.

Personally, I'd do this but with Tannehill or Brisset for far cheaper than Cousins.

You got some fans like me who think Kirk is a good qb and will certainly lead the team to a bunch of regular season wins and he is consistent. However his history and everything we have seen and know about him is he can’t elevate the team and lift them up and cover for deficiencies elsewhere on the roster and him drive the team deep into playoffs for a title contender. And because of that and his age/serious injury coming off of, I’m not inclined to sign him. Even at $35 million a year which it doesn’t look like he will even sign for that. So let him walk and take a much cheaper vet and draft a qb round one (the right qb, hello KAM and KOC).

I agree I like sitting a qb for a year but then absolutely start him year 2. Thst gives him a year to get used to playbook and teammates and learn as much as possible. The on field learning starts years 2 when they get their start. Btw I’m not a fan of nix.

37.5 is below market rate and he's unquestionably better than Tannehill or Brissett. And I actually think he'd be a good mentor for a young guy.

I'm not lobbying for this, it's what I think the Wilfs and O'Connell want, which forces Kwesi's hand.

I still like the trade back and pick up Penix and more draft capital, Kirk wouldn't take what I would offer so possibly a bridge QB for a yr. Time to get a QB of the future but have him on a rookie deal!! Build our team we have many holes and can't fill them by paying the all of the guys that are FA or soon to be. Move on from Kirk.

You'd be betting on his age and the fact that just because he wasnt asked to do much in college doesnt mean he cant. At the end of the day he only lost 1 college game. Its the way Michigan plays and it works. Thats what makes the draft interesting and tough because you have guys like this. Hes shown flashes for sure, but there just isnt enough data on him to prove he can or cant be the guy.

The whole situation is just very interesting. There are so many questions and variables we really dont know the answers to. Both sides really have no leverage at this point, Kirk with the injury, Vikes with no guaranteed backup plan.

Koc/kwesi into year 3 of a 4 year contract, does a rookie QB reset there clock? Do they have to win now to keep their jobs?

I wonder if it's worth it to trade up into the end of the 1st round to take McCarthy, get that 5th year option and avoid having another team snipe him in the 2nd round. Trading up 10/11 picks from the 2nd to the 1st shouldn't be too expensive.

As andhesloose28 said, McCarthy is a project and young, who knows what he would look like if he were 2 years older like most the other QB prospects and how far he would have developed. He has the tools (arm, mobility, seems to have good intangibles), give him time and he might develop into a very good QB. I wouldn't go past spending a very late 1st on him, whereas if he had elite tools like Josh Allen or Anthony Richardson, then you'd think about him higher.

Conversely, you have the relatively old Penix and Nix who are basically finished products, and should be ready to start Week 1 if plugged into the right system, but their upside isn't as high as McCarthy's, but they have higher floors.

Maybe he works his way into becoming our #2 QB, but you can't assume he'll get any higher than that. Deciding to not go after a QB prospect because you think Hall is that guy (he's already going to be 26!) is a fireable offense, but there is also no reason to give up on him.
