what young potential qb was available? Levis?
Maybe Purdy. Maybe Levis.
Maybe Pickett still - and maybe he would look better right now in the hands of someone better than Mike Tomlin. Would Andy Reid be making him a better QB? Probably. KOC is supposed to be one of those top-tier QB developers, right? I don't buy that either Levis or Pickett are worse, or more flawed, prospects than Jalen Hurts. No perfect prospects are going to be out there without need of some coaching and maybe building a system that fits their skills.
I'm so tired of hearing about these occasional "Great QB Drafts" on the horizon. Usually, those have 1 prospect that the scouts have been following since high school (e.g. Trevor Lawrence), and a number of teams want him but when it turns out they can't all have him, they convince themselves that Zach Wilson and Trey Lance and Mac Jones are great prospects too.
One of those legendary Great QB Drafts was 1999, when 4 were picked in round 1: Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, and Daunte Culpepper. See any Super Bowl rings there?? Gosh I wonder if we'll get the Akili Smith of the 2024 draft??
Anyway, didn't we just have one of those bumper crops? 3 QBs in the top 4 picks, so wasn't this "the year" to get one? Of course, the best 3 were gone almost immediately, which is what's going to happen in the Great QB Draft of 2024, too. So unless the Vikings are mortgaging the fjord, we'll get the 4th or 5th of this group. Is Bo Nix or Michael Penix such an awesome can't-miss prospect that the KOC/KAM braintrust has been aiming to build around for the past 3 seasons? I'm guessing the 5th QB of 2024 will be a lot like Pickett or Levis: capable of developing, maybe, but not a sure thing.
To get an NFL QB a team needs to be ready to take multiple shots, because there really are no sure things. Then they need a coach and staff who can turn him into Pat Mahomes instead of Mitchell Trubiskey.
Kevin O'Connell has never turned anyone into a good NFL quarterback, including himself. I'm pretty sure he realizes he doesn't know how, either.
