There is a lot of blame going around for why the offense performed so poorly Sunday against a bad Bear's defense and rightfully so. It was a pathetic showing from the offense without JJ in the lineup, with the Vikings putting up their worst points per drive and yards per drive since the Cowboys game last season...against a bottom five defense.
So who is actually to blame? To find that out, I took to the all-22 and looked at every bad play, every throw to Mattison, and a couple of other plays in-between, grabbed some screenshots with some horrible editing (I have absolutely no talent whatsoever with this type of thing, as you will soon find out) and share my breakdown of what went wrong in the win.
First up we have a run for no gain on 1st down on the first drive that lead to a FG (I apologized in advance for overlay in the screenshot, I don't know how to get the screenshots without those showing):
Look at the hole Mattison has on this well designed run play. He outruns one Bears defender, something a RB with an ounce of talent should have been able to do and he turns this run for no gain into a positive one. This is blocking that gets Cook in his prime to the second level, but with Mattison it is a gain of 0. Strike 1 for Mattison.
Next up, the first pass to Mattison. There were a lot of fans very upset he got so many targets, and rightfully so. Is that on the play caller or the signal caller though? This one is on the signal caller:
I am not sure what Cousins saw that made him decide to checkdown here, but he had time to allow something better to develop. Strike 1 for Cousins.
Finally the 3rd down play that forces the FG:
The ball eventually goes to Powell (arrow) for an incompletion that even if caught wasn't going to be close to a first. Meanwhile you have Osborn with a step or two on the other side who should have been the target, likely for a TD if caught. Strike 2 for Cousins.
The Vikings kick a FG, get the ball back and march down the field into FG range yet again. This time we see an actual designed pass play to Mattison (this is the only one I saw reviewing the film):
The throw needs to made right at the moment of this screenshot to give Mattison a chance at beating the Bears LBer one-on-one, but Kirk double clutches for some reason and instead the ball falls incomplete as the LBer has a chance to close on the play. Still, this was a play that asked Mattison to beat a defender, so strike 1 for KOC.
Next up, another poor run by Mattison on 2nd down that results in -2 yards:
He has a hole to his right but he just doesn't see it and runs right into a Bear's defender. Strike 3 for Mattison.
The 3rd down play on 3rd and 12 that results in us kicking a FG:
It is a designed play to Powell underneath and we know this because circled is Mattison whiffing on a block before the ball gets to the receiver. I counted two offensive PI's on this play so I am going to give another strike to KOC for a poorly designed play (although I think this play usually does much better when JJ catches this). Strike 2 for him, and another strike for Mattison because of how poorly he blocked, even if it should have drawn a penalty. Strike 4.
The next play is by far the worst play of the game from a play design standpoint and from a QB being a complete dumbass standpoint:
Prior to this screenshot, Hockenson runs past 95 like he thinks someone is going to block him, and then as soon as the ball is snapped, and he realizes no one is blocking 95, he turns around here to do what at this point? We have two people out on routes against 6 Bears defenders in coverage and I am not sure what Akers is doing. Still, the QB cannot panic and toss the ball back like he did. Strike 3 for KOC, strike 3 for Cousins.
The Vikings end up punting and on the next series Mattison gets his 3rd target:
This is right before Kirk decides to throw to the only player in this image who won't pick up the 1st on 2nd and 2. Strike 4 for Cousins.
Then there is the play that is now being ruled as a fumble for Cousins to protect his passer rating:
Mattison just gets demolished attempting to pass block and while the QB has some responsibility to be aware of his surroundings here, Mattison is the only one who gets a strike for this one, Strike 5.
Moving to the 2nd half and KOC does redeem himself with a number of plays that should have been big gains but instead end up failing because the players did not execute. Here are two of the biggest examples.
Example 1(3rd and 14, Kirk checks down to Hockenson for 8 yards):
Hock is circled in green, then we have someone wide open beyond the sticks for an easy first down. Completely unacceptable decision by the QB here. Strike 5.
Example 2(1st and 10 checkdown to Mattison):
Kirk throws to Mattison with Addison wide open. This drive results in a missed 57 yard FG. Strike 6 for Cousins.
Finally an example of Darrisaw possibly costing the Vikings a big play. Kirk throws checksdown to Hockenson again here, but with his limitations this is really his only option with Darrisaw getting beat inside:
Strike 1 for Darrisaw.
Overall, the issues look to be with the talent and execution and not the play calling Sunday. Very few of the bad plays were actually bad play calls and the biggest issues were the QB and RB. KOC deserves some blame too for sure, specifically not benching Mattison 3 weeks ago, but with just a little more talent at the RB and QB position we run away with that game.
