Yep, I must confess that at about 4pm EST on Sunday, this 50 yr fan who so desperately wanted to look at the glass half full, saw the glass, like so, so many times before, not only half empty, but shattered, on the floor in pieces, never to be a functional vessel ever again just as I had intended when I threw there.
The season was over. No hope. No light at the end of the tunnel. No sunshine breaking through the clouds. It was dark. It was sad. It was maddening. It was finished. I swore off podcasts. I swore off YouTube. I barely went on the internet.
Then I slept on it. I woke up not quite ready to give up. I spent 48 years waiting for shoes to drop and watching between fingers feeling negative play after play. I’m tired of living like that as a fan. I refuse to give up now.
10-7 is doable. Yes that means we need to go 10-4. Understood. But before you say it’s impossible, let’s break the schedule down.
1) Go 3-0 against the NFC South. All 3 of these are beatable. It won’t be easy, but none of the games will be. I think we win this week against the Panthers. I think the Falcons are limited. The Saints are good with Carr but as many have pointed out, Carr is no different from Cousins. We can go 3-0.
2) Go 5-1 in the division. Not easy, sure. However, the Bears a the true 0-3 team, the Packers are wildly inconsistent, and the Lions are the Lions. We can make this run. I know it.
3) Beat the Raiders and the Broncos. Absolutely, 100% can happen. The Raiders are sad and the Broncos are in purgatory.
That my friends is 10 wins. I might be dreaming or crazy, I know. However, you can’t look at those game and completely say it’s impossible. Add an upset of either Kansas City, San Francisco, or Cincinnati, and we have a little breathing room in those other games.
We are not done yet. I know it’s dark. I know some just want to tank. Not me. I won’t give up. I see a way through the darkness. I believe. I refuse to go back to that old way of living waiting for dreams to be crushed. It’s hard. But for my sanity, I need to remain positively purple.
