You will want Pennix way more than you want Daniels, you keep saying McDaniels, but assuming you mean Daniels
Yeah, no. Daniels led all CFP Power 5 QBs with Big Time Throws while throwing few Tuenover Worthy Plays. Oh, and he ran for like 1,800 yards despite not being a run-first QB.
I see the Raiders at 10 being the Inflection Point for Jayden. If Kevin and Kwesi think he's the guy (which I highly doubt) then they need to move up from currently 15th to 9th where the Jets sit. NYJ might be open that if both Fashanu & Alt are off the Board as the next Tier of Tackles will still be available where Minnesota is currently picking.
I'm just not sold on O'Connell actually valuing legit running ability in a QB. He talks big and then does everything he can to keep Dobbs in the pocket.
Penix fits the bill of being a guy that stays in the pocket and has no hesitation throwing Intermediate and Deep Routes. People knock him for having great WRs, well, so do the Vikings. And Joe Burrow had the best WR combo in the history of College Football.
He's also old and had two big injuries at Indiana before transferring to Washington and staying healthy for 2 straight years.
I've seen him as high as a mid-1st and as low as mid-2nd. The guys I like best have him in the early 20s.
JJ McCarthy is the other possibility. He's got a higher ceiling than Pennix but also a lower floor. Just a kid that will turn 21 his Rookie year if he declares. Big arm. Blazing speed. Stays in the pocket and locked on his Prime Read unless it just isn't there. So unlike Penix, he will take off if he just isn't seeing his guy open.
His willingness to take what the Defense gives him fits with what Kevin wants. He's not going to throw a ton of picks. The question is processing speed and ability to read Defenses.
Nix is also mocked to Minnesota a lot. I like him but Intermediate Throws are not his forte from an accuracy standpoint. And he does throw it short for YAC a ton because that's what Oregon wants. I can see O'Connell being 50/50 on him.
A loss to GB (puke) means Hall against the Lions which means 7-10. At that point things could get very interesting depending on where New England ends up. I have Drake Maye as a Top 5 ceiling prospect. If he's close then I think awfully hard about doing what it takes to move up to get him. But that also means Jayden Daniels might be right where I'm picking.
This is going to potentially be the most consequential Draft in a while for Minnesota.
