Kirk Cousins is the Viking's starting QB in 2023...but what about 2024 and beyond? Will the Vikings resign Cousins on another 1-yr deal for 2024? Will Jaren Hall step up and take over the starting QB position?
...or will the Vikings draft a QB in the early rounds of the 2024 Draft?
Just in case it's the latter, we'll need to keep track of how the 2024 Draft-eligible QB's perform during the season.
The chart below lists the Top 25 2024 QB prospects to start the 2023 College Season, along with a few "bio" stats (Height/Weight/Age). I put this together so we can just thumb down through the QB prospects quickly, look at their stats (both on-field and BIO) and see who might be a possible fit for the Vikings as the College Season progresses. Also, we all tend to focus on only the Top QB prospects (Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, etc), but there's always a few QB's that emerge as the College Season progresses and I'd like to follow those along throughout the season.
The list will be updated each week for the on-field stats and the rankings will be adjusted periodically.
A couple quick notes:
- I added a new passing stat this year, Y/A (Yards-per-Attempt), mainly because someone might have a whole bunch of passing yards, but they aren't pushing the ball down the field. For example, Will Rogers (Miss St) had the 9th most passing yards in 2022, but was 88th in Y/A, mainly because he plays in an Air Raid offense that focuses on a bunch of short passing, and Vikings HC Kevin O'Connell seems to favor a more downfield approach with longer route concepts.
- Last year I increased the list to 30 towards the end because there were so many, but since we're focusing on the Vikings possibly drafting an "early" Rd QB, there's no reason to follow a bunch of Day 3/UDFA QB's.
- The rankings are purely my best guesses based on what I watch and read throughout the week. The initial rankings are basically a composite of my thoughts on QB's from their prior seasons and rankings from across the web. There's quite a few articles out there with Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman and Deion's son, Shedeur, as Top 10 QB prospects for 2024, but I've watched plenty of Hartman during his time at Wake Forest and I'm not sold and I've yet to see Deion's son so that's why they are ranked low at the beginning of the season.
QB's Next-up:
- Kyle McCord, Ohio St: the Buckeyes have yet to name a starting QB for the 2023 season and the fact that McCord hasn't won it outright with just a little over a week until Ohio St's opening game means there's some doubt. He was a highly-regarded 5-star from PA and backed up CJ Stroud for the past 2 seasons. If he wins the starting job and plays well, he might appear on the list.
- Tyler Van Dyke, Miami (Fl): he started the 2022 season as a 1st Rd prospect, but quickly faded and was actually benched in the 3rd qtr during a late-September home loss to Middle Tennessee St. When you're benched at home vs a non-Power 5 school, you're not getting drafted and you need more time at the college level. It was smart of him to give it another shot in 2023, but he has to earn his place back on the Top 25 list.
Week 0 QB's to Watch (8/26):
- Sam Hartman (Notre Dame) vs Navy: the game will take place in Dublin, Ireland and will air on Sat afternoon (8/26) in the US. There's alot of "buzz" around South Bend that Hartman will take the Fighting Irish offense to a new level in 2023 and quite honestly, I don't think we'll know in this one as ND are heavy favorites. Still, the Irish have been known as more of a traditional, run-heavy offense behind good OL play and Hartman is known more for his heavy RPO/long mesh (holding it in the RB's gut for "ages" before pulling it away and passing) type of plays - we might get a glimpse if Hartman or ND changes their offensive styles.
- Kurtis Rourke (Ohio) @ San Diego St: younger brother of Nathan Rourke, who is currently battling for a QB2/QB3 job behind Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville. Kurtis won MAC Player of the Year in 2022, despite tearing his ACL in November that ended his season after 11 games. He had a great year in 2022 for Ohio, completing 69.1% of his passes, throwing for 25 TD's against just 4 INT's and also rushed for 245 yds and 4 TD's. He's a bit of an "under the radar" type of prospect, but if he pulls off a big win on the road to open the season after tearing his ACL, he may start getting more respect at the national level.
- Caleb Williams (USC) vs San Jose St: the nightcap game during Week 0 will feature the consensus #1 overall prospect in the 2024 Draft. Williams ended 2023 on a "sour" note when Tulane upset USC in a classic Cotton Bowl game and Williams was somewhat dinged-up in that one, and the PAC-12 Championship loss to Utah the game before that. There aren't many gripes about Williams, but one is his size/frame: he's not the smallest at 6'1", 215, but he's not the biggest, either, and he does tend to get "dinged" from time-to-time. It would probably do wonders if he add 5-10 lbs of muscle without losing his throwing abilities from inside or outside the pocket.
