Nice job on the original post. I would like to get one thing out of the way that a lot of people are going to hate. As much as some think they should break this team down and start over, it's just not gonna happen. Kirk is gonna be the QB in 2023 and probably 2024. And they're probably going to shove more money than most would like into 2024/25. So I think we should all prepare ourselves for them to proceed as such. Which means a lot of the vets returning again.
It's very important what they're gonna do defensively that will dictate how to move forward in the draft and free agency. That seems pretty obvious to say, but I just can't see KOC going away from the 3-4. And I think that with whoever they pick at DC, they'll stick with the Cover-6 or Cover-3. The wild card is really Flores who relies on more man coverage and lots of blitzing. But even still, I think we'll see more of both than we saw last year.
Either way, I don't see them spending big on FA or draft on DBs right now. Modest deals to return Duke and PP or like is about all I anticipate happening. I could see them grabbing some CB depth in the draft.
I do think they'll draft a C but late. I just don't see KAM spending a high draft pick in that spot and they'll probably add a 1yr bargain starter. They might actually surprise and spend a bit more on a versatile G than we'd have normally thought. The Reed signing was a fail but I think they believe in that method and will try it again.
I think they'll go big in FA on an ILB. It's a deep class and a big time position of need. And my guess is it'll be someone whose cap number they can shove into 25/26.
I really don't think Dalvin will be back. I don't think he's a scheme fit personally. It actually wouldn't surprise me if someone trade for him. But I do think they'll draft another RB. Just not early. But I do expect a pass catching back to be added.
If I'm overly bullish on anyone from the 2022 draft class, it's Nailor. I think he's gonna be the #2/3 in 2023. They might keep Thielen on a considerable pay cut or grab a low cost guy but I really don't see them spending early draft capital here.
My guess is that it goes to the D line early and often. And I would bet that Z isn't let go. In fact, his contract makes him way more likely to be traded than cut for financial reasons. They might even rework Z and push some of his dough into 2024/5. Hunter isn't going anywhere. Wonnum is gone and Jones is meh. I also have a feeling they're aren't going to spend on Dalvin. I get a value vibe from KOC for the IDL. I think we'll see him sign someone but more of a guy who can flip inside or out.
So my prelim plan would be
Trade down and get an early to mid 2nd plus a late 2nd or early third. Unless our QBOTF is there or an edge drops further than expected.
Trade Dalvin for a 5th (probably wishful thinking)
2nd and 3rds on d line and LB. Maybe a CB, RB, or WR.
4th Rd targets are C, CB, WR, and RB.
The rest on depth.
I do think it's fun to imagine this crew drafting a QB. I hope they do just to make things interesting.
