Extend Cousins or ... ?

Kirk will only cost them 10 million or something on the cap in 2023, so its nowhere near the same thing. Even if its just a one year rental. Again I doubt it will actually happen but the way the Vikings restructured Kirk it leaves the door open for that. They have something in their back pocket, there was other ways to create cap space.

I think your dislike for Kirk really blinds you to the data points on Lance. SF isn't sold on him.  They weren't at the start of the season either, and it really didn't take much reading between the lines to see it. Heck, even now he's lost his starting job to a guy that was not good by any means. So I can see why they might have kicked the tires on Kirk, even though they have to maintain some type of value for Lance to try and recoup something of what they paid for him. I understand them not wanting to pay much, because I do think they don't see much (if any) surplus value in said contract, so I get that. But that's also why I doubt talks would have gone far, even before talking an extension with Cousins to waive the NTC.

Lance is a bust. I think SF knows it or at the very least recognizes that it's a high probability. 

In terms of a complete team, they are in win now mode, and in terms of cap, they will have to pay the piper very soon. They don't have much to work with (3M I think) and are in a tough spot next year. I've heard Rodgers as a possibility there too, though I don't know they fit that contract in.

They really are a wild card if QB play holds them back again this season and we regress to the mean. 

Yeah agreed. I dont want Kirk on the Vikings with this current team. But if we had the Niners team I think Kirk would be more than serviceable and make them super bowl favorites. Purdy isnt some hidden gem, that Niner team is just stacked and he didnt do anything stupid. Its literally the only team that would probably trade for Kirk. Kirk isnt going to get a a 3 year deal with any team, Vikings was his best shot. He honestly may just retire after this year if he doesnt want to go year to year with teams. There is no market for him this year besides the Niners or if Rodgers falls out with the Jets maybe them. Sure maybe a team next year is in win now mode and wants to take a chance with him but I will bet it will next be more than a 1 year deal.

I don't know. They really had no choice in announcing him to be the starter. That writing was on the wall when they drafted him. On the flip side, they hid him from the media and in practice the best they could all pre-season. They talked him up in public of course, but there was plenty published on just how bad he looked in what reps people saw. He was voted captain and was arbitrarily removed by the coaches. There was a lot more back then, it's not like I was saving links, but everything I read about him at the time screamed buyer's remorse. His 2022 preseason was a mixed bag to put it nicely. It really wasn't what you'd expect from a guy who had a year to develop and prepare. The fact that he's lost his job to Mr. Irrelevant, who I'd add was hardly stellar, also says a lot about the situation.

Yeah, he only played 2 games before the injury, so you're right that there's a chance. Losing to the team that ultimately ended up picking 1 overall even in crappy conditions certainly doesn't bode well though, does it? I'll say this, I wouldn't pay much to get him here in Minnesota. That would be a mistake... Late round pick, sure. Anything more than that, pass. I'd rather get the 3rd round comp pick when Cousins leaves.

Lance is an example of what is much more likely to be the outcome when you have a QB you can build a team around and then spend multiple picks to draft a QB who gets anointed before he even shows he is better than the guy he took the job from. There is no way Lance was better than JimmyG when he was named the starter. He will most likely never be their starter and the picks he cost will hurt the depth of the team for years.

We should trade Kirk straight up for Lance so the Kirk haters can get their top of the draft future franchise QB.

So you don’t think Lance is good and is worse than Jimmy G but you want the Vikings to trade for him and waste time because… It will show fans you disagree with?
