As much as a QB costs a huge chunk of the cap, so now does the WR1 (if you have a Tyreek, or JJ type), so does a dominant DE, OT, etc etc etc.
Given that teams and the NFL can certainly be pretty merciless with contracts, it's impossible to blame the players for doing the same. Everybody wants money and security, period.
SO...that said...it's pretty ridiculous to drag out the Cousins contract babble over and over. He's basically guilty of knowing his worth, and staying relevant...where others have peaked and fallen, or gotten truly ridiculous, or never lived up to a big contract. I'm pretty sure Denver's having buyer's remorse right now, and if Allen sabotages another Bills playoff run...won't it be fair to drag out the "but what's he won" narrative on him, soon? All the athletic ability (on a very good, balanced team) isn't worth much if you overplay yourself into tragic mistakes with worrisome consistency.
Cousins is in a "prove it" year, but so is the whole team. They set a very high bar with the 13 win season last year, because anything less from KOC and co. will seem like a brutal sophomore slump...and this fanbase calls for heads with little to know hesitation (just ask KAM). Until Kirk actually has someone on the roster that can take the job from him, he's the most likely person to have the job next. All the speculation, rumors, and bibble-babble every offseason continues to mean exactly nothing until he quits being among the best elements of the team.
