Extend Cousins or ... ?

It’s not a fantasy world, it’s the reality lol. The offense put up 10 points and it wasn’t due to crazy weather like that outdoor game in mn. We had one drive that had more than 10 net yards until the final 5 minutes of the game. There have been breakdowns of that game shared as well, we had guys running open the throws just weren’t being made.

Despite more talent around him and better conditions than the outdoor game, the offense run by cousins was a major problem still in similar ways.

There's a lot of IFs and assumptions with this statement. It makes while they're cheap and IF you can develop them. Burrow is still cheap. Mahomes even with that contract is cheap. He's not even in the top 10 salary of QBs right now. KC is going to have to re-address that at some point. Add to it that KC has had some ridiculous luck finding talent in the back of the draft (the kind of luck we only wish Rick had)... and you get my point. Burrow is up for extension right now... so time's up in Cincy. They can structure that deal in such a way to make it cheapish for a bit, but they have to pay the piper eventually... or Burrow does a Brady.



I didn't know Kirk played defense. I agree Kirk's salary is part of the issue, but I'm so tired of the idea that QB = winning. It's not. He's one guy on a 53 man roster. 1 of 22 starters (the most important yes, but just how important is something literally no one has quantified). Danny Dimes looked otherworldly with a defense giving up 400 yards like it did all season long. I just cannot put that one on Cousins. I'll put a bit more of the SF game on Kirk, but to be fair, in both games, interior pressure was the downfall. Pat Mahomes would not have survived that kind of pressure. KC rebuilt their line after their SB loss, for that very reason.




This is the real problem.. QBs are very overrated right now. That's why people gravitate to those cheap rookie deals. I don't disagree with the premise that it's the most important position on the field... at all. But quantify that please. Don't just say that and throw all the money in the world at it. There's still 53 on the roster. 48 dress every Sunday. 22 start plus you have 3 specialists. Even the QB is very much aided by the WR and the WR is aided by the QB, so it's not like it's cut and dry as to who is creating whom... Did Rice make Montana/Young or did they make Rice? Would Cris Carter be the GOAT if he played in SF? It's bit of all to be honest, and it's not easily quantified. What would have happened if Brady was drafted by literally any other team than NE? I'm guessing he never sniffs a chance at starting, much less becomes Tom FREAKING Brady. I doubt QBs are worth 10% of the cap. That right there is a problem, and it's why you can win with a good QB on a reasonable contract.

Brady, for instance, has never taken huge money. That's not a coincidence. It gives his team flexibility. Brady is also the only smart enough to recognize that those rings lead to other revenue streams, and ones that have and will extend well beyond his playing career. Though to be fair, I think his personality works there too, which I don't think Cousins truly has going for him, but that's a different conversation.

Kirks contract isnt even crazy anymore. The reality is even with his contract since 2018 it wasnt all his FAULT. We have drafted poorly since then and just continued to extend and keep our guys all while never replacing them with new upcoming talent. It has been a huge snowball effect. Again its not all Kirks FAULT, but has he been the SOLUTION 100%? No you cant say that as well. Why pay him that top dollar if he cant overcome some of the teams deficiencies.

Now here we are in 2023 and the debate is really just an internet debate between fans. Ive seen enough especially this offseason to determine how Kwesi and Kevin operate. Kirk has a chance to be here next year but its going to depend on the teams success this year. My guess is we would likely need a NFC ship appearance at the very least or a very very competitive divionsal loss on the road that Kirk balled out for Kirk to be here next year. The guy is about to be 35, this regime would be going into their 3rd year they arent going to tie their careers to Kirk. At the end of the day the generic pocket QB is a thing of the past now and you are just limited your offense if you still have one.

One thing worth mentioning is...Kirk has had a different offensive coordinator and a different play caller every year in purple. So 2023 will be the FIRST time he isn't learning a new system and has the same voice in his helmet. How much that's worth, dunno.

These are SAD days for the Kirk Haters... Kwesi and KOC had 2 years to get rid of Kirk and in both instances kept him. They even had a shot at Levis and Hooker to replace him and choose not to but gave him another weapon instead in Addison. And Kwesi said extension talks are only on hold with Kirk they have not been terminated. The haters are now pinning their hopes on Hall...

yeah, I think KAM/KOC would go year to year with Kirk at this point, and Kirk wants a long term deal. That's my gut feeling. If Kirk would sign through 24, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

I'm not a huge fan of the situation we're in right now with this one either, especially since I doubt we're drafting high enough to get a good replacement.
