Or it’s possible he isn’t good and he is part of a plan to get the top pick in the draft like some here are suggesting we do.
The problem with tanking or using so much capital to move up in a draft is that it’s so difficult (ok impossible)to know the player you are getting .
In the past 5 years how many of the top 3 QBs in the draft could replace Cousins and be a long term better QB right now?
Would you be happy right now if we had gone all in on Lance? Wilson? Definitely Lawrence Burrow and Hebert. Mayfield, Darnold and Allen? Allen maybe or probably but he hasn’t won the big one either. Pickett?
If you are terrible it’s worth using a top pick to draft a top QB. If you are average to better it’s too big of a risk to spend that many picks to move up and there are probably a handful of times in league history that has worked out.
Imagine if we had traded up and used our draft capital to grab Baker Mayfield. Would that have been wise?
How about the Bradford pick? Or RG3? How many teams have actually moved up and got a bond fide “SB winning with an inferior roster” QB that fits the things people say Kirk can’t do?
Allen is only a "maybe"? Well okay then...
How many SBs has he won? That seems to be the standard. In fact Cousins beat him last year head to head. Allen can’t beat Mahomes or Burrow so is he worth keeping? And his salary cap hit is going to blow away what we paid Kirk so they won’t be able to build a team around him.
So where is the benefit in having him?
