Purple Insider Mailbag:
@geoffthejohnson The defense had all kinds of problems this year, but did you ever get an inkling from being around the players (particularly the veterans) that there was frustration with Ed Donatell and his approach/scheme?
That seems so likely, but I don't think I heard any reports of it.
I saw Patrick Peterson defended Donatell on his pod, maybe in part because the system actually fit him really well and he had a great year. If there was frustration from players who were used differently and struggled, those players were never really in a position to say something because the team kept winning. Who’s going to say, “Hey everyone, this stinks!” when the team is 13-4? We got hints from O’Connell throughout the year that he wanted them to play tighter in coverage and get after the QB more but never heard any definitive statements from players about the scheme.

@joshuar_Smith Nothing against Dalvin, who has been great in general. But it has to be over for him in Minnesota, right? Why even re-work a deal for a 28-year-old RB with his amount of tread? His over-usage puzzled me at times in ‘22. I’d be even more puzzled if they bring him back.
The only reason would be that ownership just loves him and says they aren’t allowed to move on. He’s expensive and did not provide anything you wouldn’t have expected from a replacement-level running back this year. And it’s not going to get better with RBs. I’m with you completely on his usage. He still ended up with 264 carries despite the team moving to a pass-first approach, while the backup RBs didn’t even get scraps. Maybe next year they should take a Robert Smith, Scottie Graham, Amp Lee approach.

@just1sbb4idie If we sign Tomlinson to a new deal would his void cap number go away? I think its like 7.5 million
I got my pal Brad Spielberger from PFF on this one… here’s how he explained it: If they extend him before a certain date, they can spread out the $7.5 dead cap money. It doesn’t just disappear into thin air but it hurts less that way. If negotiations go past that date, the Vikings will still be on the hook for $7.5 million, even if they give him an extension. If I’m Tomlinson, I’m not agreeing to anything now. He played like a beast this year and teams should be lining up for him, especially considering his reputation as a high character and intelligent player. As is always the case with kicking the cap can down the road, the bill always comes due.

@rinkygolf Cleveland is the biggest interior lineman (312 pounds). Bradbury is 300 and Ingram is 307. They all get pushed around in pass protection. Does being an outside zone running team marry the team to smallish interior lineman?
The team only ran the ball 35% of the time this year.
I didn’t see weight as being the issue as much as technique and understanding what the pass rush is trying to do. There were so many free rushers on stunts/twists or quick L’s based on a pass rush move rather than just them being overpowered (getting crushed by Dexter Lawrence not withstanding). Guards who are over 300 pounds should be fine when it comes to the power element but you have to be able to diagnose what the defense or pass rusher is doing instantly and with a natural tackle and rookie guard that was a struggle. Plus, the quarterback is susceptible to interior pressure and always has been, which makes their jobs more challenging.
@darrickmoren What does a contract extension look like for Hunter?
Bradley Chubb is a little younger but his deal went for five years, $110 million with $63 million guaranteed. All the recent deals for top pass rushers have been in the range of $23-$27 million per year, so I’d put Hunter in that ballpark. As great as Hunter is, that’s a pretty risky bet.

@daddy4547 What do you think about getting a bigger and better nose guard who can push the pocket like linval joeseph dalvin is to short and small I saw a picture last year of him and Pierce I was like yah no wonder it's Taking so long to collapse the pocket
They might need to replace Tomlinson anyway because his contract is up but I don’t think he is too small by any means. PFF graded him as the 14th best defensive tackle overall and eighth best in terms of pass rush grade. He was also top 10 in pass rush win rate. He was a beast this year. Their pass rush was hindered by receivers being wide open all the time, a lack of blitzing, Za’Darius Smith slowing down in the second half of the season as he was dealing with a knee issue and the lack of depth. To your point, however, I do think the nose tackle position is very valuable and they could also use a pure interior pass rusher. They haven’t had one since Tom Johnson.
