Depends on when Arizona fills their Head Coach vacancy, IMO. I think Flores is their #1 choice and they are waiting to see if he takes that position. If he does, then it appears Desai is Plan B...

It's worth noting that Desai was passed over twice this offseason already (Cleveland & now Miami)...

I disagree(but could obviously be very wrong!) about Flores being number 1 option. They wrapped up these interviews Thursday night. This is the “collaboration” front office. Everything takes some time, even firing the worst DC in the league!

The one thing this front office/coach can’t afford to do is make moves that signal they’re going all in and then fail. I think Flores sends that message due to his notoriety and very low percent chance he’s here next year. Thus 3 different DCs and maybe schemes in 3 years. Desai provides reason for optimism(he’s not Ed), probable stability(kinda like Wes on offense, just not really a HC kinda guy it seems), and scheme similarity so they’re not starting over.

I think they do it before Demeco gets the Houston job so they can settle on other assistants before that crazy transition involving guys on Houston/SF.

Just as another take, the Purple FTW! guy agrees that Flores is the #1 DC option and the Arizona HC job is holding up the Vikings DC search...

I love our passion. We agree it is taking a while and are trying to read into that. All the while 1 business day has elapsed since interviews wrapped up!!! I’ll be happy either way, assuming Pettine isn’t the pick.

I love our passion. We agree it is taking a while and are trying to read into that. All the while 1 business day has elapsed since interviews wrapped up!!! I’ll be happy either way, assuming Pettine isn’t the pick.

If Pettine is the pick then it pretty much shows that Vikings do not want to win

Shouldn't they focus on hiring the best candidate? Donatell had zero chance of being a HC in the future and look where that got us. They need to develop the position coaches so they can have a guy who can step up in case Flores does take a HC job in the future.

Sure but I do not want a backdoor of hiring coaches over and over every year, remember when Zimmer keeps hiring offensive coordinators every year? It got very old and tiring, it would be nice if Vikings have stability at the position for 2 to 3 years or more

Seems like this always happens to the Vikings. We get the runt of the litter every f*cking time. I thought that was all done when we brought in new people, but we will end up with Petitine.

They probably did not want to pay Fangio the big money he is getting form Miami. They didn't even bother interviewing him.

This whole management team is on shaky footing. Kwesi had a terrible draft.

KOC was not a play caller and the QB he developed was traded away there is no guarantee they will make the right decision on QBs or when he calls plays.

These guys already made a terrible mistake in Donatell ZERO faith in this coaching and management staff right now.

The Wilfs employed Spielman for 10+ years, and in KAM's first year as GM, they won 13 games. In the eyes of the Wilfs, he's got tons and tons of rope to burn. He isn't close to being on shaky footing, no matter what the fans think.

O'Connell and Goff were together for a single year. It was Goff's 5th year in the NFL. I see zero correlation between Goff and O'Connell's ability to develop young QBs. We don't have any evidence on whether he could or not, and I'm not counting Kellen Mond. He was a Spielman bust pure and simple.

Hasn't Desai's name already popped up on HC watch lists? I suspect (if the defense is successfully turned around) that whomever we pick will probably be gone in 2024 or 2025 at the latest.

Well for one, the Vikings need a proven DC... Now I have to admit I'm at a bit of a loss as to why Fangio was never interviewed... perhaps he didn't want to come here, but who knows. Now that said, perhaps part of the conversation with Flores is grooming a replacement. That part is probably the easiest to solve to be honest.

I'll also note that with his lawsuit against the NFL going on, I wouldn't be so certain that Flores will necessarily be a HC next season. Plenty of teams are going to hold that against him even if they shouldn't. Flores has a proven track record in this area, and with team that already has a pretty decent offense, I'd welcome a guy like him coming in to turn around the defense, especially if he had a good succession plan lined up for when he eventually moved on.

@kyebaxter Have you had a chance to break down the differences between the 4 defensive coordinator candidates? Any ideas on their general tendencies?

We know that Brian Flores’ teams are going to be crazy aggressive when it comes to blitzing. In 2021 the Dolphins were second in blitz percentage. Sean Desai was in Chicago during Fangio and didn’t blitz often when he was DC in 2021, so they’d be looking at a lot of the same stuff schematically but presume that it was going to be implemented better. Pettine being the in-house candidate might make fans confused but he has a decent track record going back to the Rex Ryan days. I don’t know much about the Saints’ defensive scheme but they only allowed 184 yards per game passing and had 48 sacks, which is pretty impressive.

@tjmamme Who's your favorite DC candidate rumored to be interviewing with Vikings?

I don’t mean to cop out in back-to-back questions but I don’t know how to have a “favorite.” What’s likeable about Flores is that he turned around a defense recently. When he got to Miami they were horrific and within one year they improved to a top-10 scoring defense. He’s the most sure-thing candidate but whether the person they hires is a success or not will probably depend on how well they rebuild the roster.

Cardinals are asking for permission to talk to Bengals coordinators, Vikings are better off not waiting to see Flores will become head coach of the Cardinals or all the good coordinators will be gone and Vikings will have no choice but to hire Pettine, Vikings should just hire the best fit for defensive coordinator and just be done with it
