I do have to disagree and comment on the first line from Ireland's Zone Coverage article there. The Vikings have actually cast a relatively "narrow" net so far in terms of the number of candidates they've reached out to.

Here's the list of Coordinator openings in the NFL and how many candidates each team reached out to:

Defensive Coordinator:
Cleveland - 4
Carolina - 3 (should be noted they are also looking for HC so this is likely to expand after that hire)
Atlanta - 6 (should be noted that one was blocked - Evero, so could be only 5)
Miami - 4
Minnesota - 3

Offensive Coordinator:
Baltimore - 7
LAC - 6
LAR - 5/6 (not sure if they've formally requested to interview former NYJ OC Mike LaFleur)
NYJ 9 (should be noted that two were denied, so could be only 7)
Tampa Bay - 4
Tennessee - 4
Washington - 7 (should be noted that two were denied, so could be only 5)

So of all the teams in the NFL looking for a Coordinator, the Vikings have actually cast the narrowest net of them all if you consider Carolina will likely expand their DC search when they hire a Head Coach. The average # of requested interviews from the 12 openings is 5.2, so the Vikings are 2 candidates short of the league average this offseason.

Without any new names being requested it feels like they were dead set on hiring Desai to me.

I think there's a "pause" to see what happens in Arizona this week with Quinn getting a 2nd interview and Payton coming in tomorrow. If Flores doesn't get the HC job in Arizona, perhaps he does the interview with Minnesota and chooses between the Minnesota and Atlanta DC openings.

I do agree though, that without any more names requested, it seems that they are set on either Flores or Desai.

Important to note that Miami is scheduled to interview both Desai and Fangio today (1/25) and will probably bring-in Kris Richard later this week as they are probably looking to finalize their decision relatively soon. If the Vikings really want Desai and can't afford to wait to see what happens with Arizona & Flores, they may need to really jump on it sooner rather than later...

...and if the league really does have a Rooney Rule requirement that teams must interview two, external minority candidates, if they can't get Flores to interview before the Arziona decision, they need to schedule another interview with another external, minority candiate or possibly face punishment from the NFL, which may include loss of Draft picks, which they certainly can't afford. And no, I don't believe any team has ever not fulfilled a Rooney Rule requirement, so we don't know what the punishment might be for violating it but I'm sure the loss of Draft picks would be on the table.

Which would certainly be contrary to the purpose of the rule in the first place. An interesting point.

Would be an ultimate failure if they hire him. Why? They should have just done it during the season if he was their guy. This would look real bad.

My only problem with Flores is that I don’t think he would stay here for more than a season if hired. We need a guy that can stay for a few years atleast. The guy from Seattle is probably our best yet. Either him or Vic Fangio himself.

I've tried to be patient with the handling of the DC position during the season and up through the firing of Ed. If they turn around an give the job to a guy who's been in house the entire time there needs to be a lot of questions and scrutiny about what the hell they were waiting for. Plus I don't want Pettine
I didn't want Ed and then moving to Pettine would just feel like a big let down.

McVay Coordinators left every year and they still won the Superbowl.

If you hire the right DC he's bringing the right guys with him that he's already been grooming or has connections he's already invested in or intrested in bringing to Minnesota to develop behind him.

Salah had Ryans ready to go. The same is true for many good organizations around the League. Heck, it's true with the Offensive Coaching Staff in Minnesota. 3 Assistant Coaches already interviewed for OC roles.

Glaringly, none of Dolorous Ed's Assistant Coaches are under consideration either by Kevin or by any other Team. Which is further evidence that he sucked in every possible way and hopefully the new DC cleans house.

The kind of guys you get who aren't going to be under consideration for HC roles are retreads. The Vikings just had a retread and it was a disaster. How quickly the next guy moves in is the least of my concerns.

Can he build the right Coaching Staff around him while effectively teaching a system that gets the most out of the current and incoming Players that can sustained moving forward is far more important.

If they are seriously considering this guy why not fire donatell with four or so games left and see what he can do??? I guess that would have made to much sense.
