No, it's your opinion on where his market should/would be. As Slapnut tried to explain to a few people, market value is what someone will pay. It is based on a competitive auction like environment and what could be had on said open market. Free Agency is that open market for players and we do not actually know what his would be.

In terms of Bosa for example you in no way factored in the cap increase and what the market looks like now with everyone having more cap. That definitely matters in terms of market value and JJ's representation would be insane not to point that out if Vikings don't acknowledge it. Also AJ Brown gets 79% of the yards per game as JJ based on nfl reference. If you apply the same percentage to the contract it would be over 40 million for JJ. Obviously just one stat but throwing out a number a worse WR got doesn't mean JJ's market is just barely above it.



Lol, not only did I not say this but I even acknowledged what that actually means to me in another post. It is a way to justify not paying actual market value because we have leverage given the situation. You can't push the idea you want him to have market value while also claiming we shouldn't pay market value because...

That's the point being made haha. People are using that we essentially own the asset with the ability to franchise tag as leverage and demand JJ take an amount that is more reasonable in their opinion. Many include blaming JJ in these scenarios while doing so despite not seeming to understand this.



That's fine, I am totally fine with the system too. It has nothing to do with what is being pointed out in terms of JJ's actual market value. It's just opinions on what he should get from these individuals. Again you claimed you want him to get market value then explained how we have have tools that make it so he shouldn't get it. My point is because of those tools it is not market value, he would need to hit FA to see that and we all likely know it would be more then like it usually is.

Comparing this to Cousins is even more crazy though. Actively pushing to play games and blame our best player for trying to possibly get market value is crazy. Especially from those who just defended a worse player at their position making top level money. Thinking the best player at their position is worth market value while the 12th best at theirs is not isn't some issue with how others view markets value or using tools like the franchise tag. It's just pointing out that logically it makes more sense to pay a player close to market value if they are truly elite than if they are just above average. All of the discussion around franchise tag and how the NFL is set up is specifically talking about rules designed to help keep players without letting them find their actual market value. That’s the other point on market value I had to the other poster.

We disagree about the market. Jefferson's market is that of a player on a rookie contract seeking an extension. His market is not that of a unrestricted free agent being bid on by all 32 teams. If he wants an unrestricted free agent deal he needs to play under his current deal until he is an unrestricted free agent. 

Nah, the entire point of signing him is to have a window around JJ imo, if they play everything right. If we are in a spot say 3 years down the road where we still suck and it has t worked I would rebuild. Except like in the form of getting assets for players not just waiting around until they all expire and aren’t worth resigning to us.

If it gets to that point and you have him locked up longer, great. A team would likely pay more for not having the hit. You are about to rebuild anyways so can still reset the cap just with that dead money on there too.

If it becomes clear this current direction has failed I have no problem adjusting the approach at that time. Right now we have a young rookie qb and one of the best WRs to help. It just makes too much sense to keep him and give the young core a real shot before just trading guys who help the current vision off. At least give it a chance imo, we have waited years to even try this.

That is his current situation, yes. You still don’t seem to understand this isn’t an argument just what the actual term means in an everyday sense when talking assets. That’s why slap and others have tried pointing it out.

Market value is not about looking in depth to what each context is and making random opinions about value... It’s specific term related to what something is worth on an open market with competition lol. That’s what is being pointed out, you can disagree with the way that term has been used for many many years. Real estate. Investments. Basically anything related to assets.

If you disagree that’s fine but then you guys are arguing completely different things and pushing random opinions on others because of it (like you just did with me). That’s the issue. Disagreeing with a basic definition that many probably use daily in a different sense than what you are trying to do isn’t a reason to make some of these conclusions. It’s just that gap of how you are using a well known term

The players are selling their services (asset) and free agency is the market they can do so openly (market) and the teams are the buyers (competition).

That’s what many have been referencing. It’s why it was brought up that market value is what someone is willing to pay before.

Again this is where a big gap is coming from, not necessarily a big deal in itself but it’s leading to strawman type comments not actually said.
