My guess would be he can get 40 million per on the open market right now if that team doesn't have to offer any pick compensation.
If JJ is going to refuse to sign even a reasonable market contract I agree we should look to trade him as opposed to letting this go for years in a contentious manner where both sides are upset and we are just biding time before all our leverage is gone (aka using up the franchise tags).
a) we may not have any viable trade offers
b) we don't have to let it go on for years, just as we don't have to do anything right now
c) JJ's stats may plummet in 2024, 2025, etc. We may get worse as a team and not better. It happens all the time, especially when we have absolutely zero proven NFL talent in the QB room right now.
When a guy is widely considered the best at his position, there is only one way to go.....
If we don't have any viable trade offers with leverage AND we don't let it go on for years... Well then we end up signing him at a later date for a higher price.
C. This is the only way what we are doing makes sense, if we feel he is currently overvalued but he will drop off to the point people don't view him as elite. It might happen but I think it is a bit harder when we are talking about a 23 year old who is breaking records and widely considered a top player in the entire NFL. In fact, care to give even 5 similar examples of this working for a team?
You aren't wrong that a lot of this should be considered, it's just that it always is true. Teams still almost always retain their truly elite talent when they have the chance for a reason. The benefits of signing a top player at his position in his prime outweigh the negatives and risk. We are not forced to do anything given what you are pointing out but it doesn't change that easily the best outcome for both sides is likely working together on a deal. That's why there aren't tons of examples in real life of it playing out the way you are pushing for when top players are involved.
