As we come to the final week of Kevin O'Connell's first regular season, I decided to watch the first game of Mike Zimmer's tenure, week 1 at St. Louis, 2014. These are tweets copied and pasted from last night, but in the future, I may write these out in longer form for this exercise. I watched the condensed 41 minute broadcast version on NFL+, so I saw every play and only a few replays. If you have any suggestions moving forward with this exercise, let me know!
-Just had a nice pregame interview with Jeff Fisher. He looks pretty sweaty already.
-Cordarrelle Patterson just returned the opening kickoff from the very back of the endzone lol flag on the play and the Vikings will start at the 11-yard line.
-Adrian Peterson said that he'd score a touchdown on the first play. He just took the opening run for six...yards.
-Second-year receiver Adam Thielen is in for 22 personnel on a very obvious run play.
-Matt Kalil with a terrible false start as the Vikings are driving. 3rd and 20.
-Anddd Blair Walsh splits the uprights.
-Man I TOTALLY forgot that Jasper Brinkley played for Zimmer.
-It is funny seeing the team doing all they can to get Cordarrelle involved. End-arounds, sweeps, etc.
-Robert Blanton just catapulted a gunner into Marcus Sherels on a punt return. Sherels is hurt.
-Lol 3rd and 15 and the Vikings opt for a draw to Matt Asiata.
-Greg Jennings catches a pass for 20 yards then drops the next pass. Matt Cassel then proceeds to not use his hands to catch the shotgun snap and this game is terrible.
-Sebastian Thunderbucket gets a strip sack on the first play of the Rams' next drive. Josh Robinson then makes a Cris Carter-like interception. This game isn't terrible anymore.
(NOTE: Sebastian Thunderbucket was the nickname given to Vikings defensive tackle Tom Johnson by KFAN's Power Trip Morning Show. Their theory was that no one paid attention to how good Johnson was because his name was too boring.)
-Matt Cassel to Greg Jennings to give the Vikings a 13-0 halftime lead. The Vikings are clearly improved yet still flawed to begin 2014. The Rams are terrible.
-Shaun Hill just got benched for Austin Davis to start the second half. What an odd decision by Jeff Fisher.
-Antone Exum just showed up on kick return. Reminds me of when fans were pissed that he never played.
-
-Anthony Barr is destroying people.
-
-Aaron Donald is playing in his first game and is doing everything you'd want out of a fifth-year Pro Bowler.
-Cassel throws a checkdown to Rhett Ellison who the announcer calls "Adrian Peterson"
-Vikings go up 27-3 as Cassel finds kinda young Kyle Rudolph for a seven-yard touchdown. Rams fans are sprinting to the exits.
-
-
And so concludes our film session! It was fun seeing the "old vets" we've grown accustomed to trying to make names for themselves. Xavier Rhodes was in year 2, Barr was a rookie, and Griffen had been thrust into a starting spot even though no one knew for sure if he was capable of handling it. What a blast it was to see the beginning of the old regime and it helps put the 2022 Vikings into perspective.
