More than one thing can be true at the same time.
A ton of Teams are using the Fangio Defense. Scoring is down as a result of the 2 Deep Safety Shell allowing fewer explosive plays to WRs who run 4.2 40s or misdirection plays that scheme a guy wide open 15 yards down the field.
But Defensive Systems, just like Offensive ones, need plays called. It's not the exact same look, assignments, etc. on every single snap.
Ed Donatell, despite being Vic Fangio's right hand man for many years, appears to be bad at playcalling. And potentially more.
Bynum has been critiqued quite a bit for playing so far off. But the CBs besides Peterson are doing the exact same thing. The counter argument would be that they aren't listening to him and playing closer. But the counter to that would be that if they are truly going rogue then he should sit their asses on the bench.
Ed is allowing them to play that far off. Maybe not encouraging, but he's tolerating it because he's either afraid of bombs (which they're giving up anyways) or he fears that the players he'd bring in are even worse.
Bad playcalling. Even worse execution. And that's just in the Secondary, which would be historically bad without Harrison Smith and Patrick Peterson, who are 33 and 32 years old.
Kendricks either isn't a 3-4 ILB, has lost a step or both. I suspect it's both. Hicks is clearly cooked.
Hunter is playing like a Top 10 Edge against the run. As a pass rusher, not so much. Z is clearly hurt. Of all the D-Linemen only Tomlinson gets any kind of consistent pressure.
So how about moving Hunter to Line next to Dalvin on 3 & long? How about more stunts? How about Sullivan blitzing from the Slot? How about taking Hicks out and adding Metellus on the back end so Harry can roam near the LOS?
Some guys are fading, in the wrong scheme or both. Others look poorly coached, lacking in talent, or both. The scheme is being deployed in the most vanilla, unimaginative way possible.
But I don't believe it's toast for the foreseeable future. Trade Hunter, he's not a scheme fit. Cut Kendricks. Trade out of the late 1st to acquire more picks in the Top 100. Spend them all on Defense. And the cap space from Kendricks and Cook.
I'd use the Draft on EdgeX2, CB2 and Interior Pass Rusher. I'd ink an ILB not in his 30s and a Slot CB.
And I'd fire Donatell and take a long look at most of the Defensive Assistants. Cine shouldn't have struggled to learn the playbook. Dantzler looks worse than ever. Bynum has regressed the longer the season has gone on.
The worst mistake Kevin and Kwesi can make is to solely blame the talent. Donatell is over his head. Even his blitz designs stink, when he can be bothered to actually use them. Something is rotten in Denmark...But Hamlet can live another day. All is not lost for next year. We've seen poor performing units turn it around and become halfway decent. Big challenge for the New Regime.
