I’ll admit and say this once - I’m a little nervous about this week. Washington is one of this middle of the road teams that if they play well and get some breaks, can beat you. If it goes wrong, you can beat them pretty easy. One never knows until the game starts.
We will beat them despite this being the first team in weeks without key injuries and an injury report that’s 4 times as long as ours. However, they just barely beat Indy last week who playing a QB I have never heard of before. They’re just so over the place every game. However, we will win and here’s why….
1. THEYRE CORNERS ARE THAT VULNERABLE! Per PFF, the Washington cornerback crew rank 31st in the league and are by far the worst. The three ranked corners are ranked 75, 78, & 89. Now their safeties are excellent but they can’t cover the entire field and every receiver. Pete Bercich did an excellent breakdown of this on Vikings.com. Indy had players open (wide - wide open) all the time last week and maybe with a more experienced QB, they would have hit some of them but the Indy QB never saw them. Now with Hockenson here, he should be able to keep those safeties in check down the middle of the field and make those safeties choose where to lean towards.
2. PRESSURE HEINICKE! We have to keep the pressure on which will a lot tougher without DT. Blaylock and Bullard are going to have to step up. I also think it’s more likely that we will see more of the 3 edge rushers look as well. I’d love to see more blitzes and perhaps unleash Harrison Smith a few times.
3. INTERIOR OL NEEDS TO BE AT LEAST AVG! So this goes along with the first. If the IOL can’t hold off the fantastic Washington IDL, we can’t expose their corners. I have faith. I believe that Bradbury, Ingram, and Cleveland will do just enough to allow us to get the ball down the field. To that, I think KOC is going to dial up a lot of play action and roll outs and give them help with either a back or something. He has to. Washington relies on that IDL maybe more then any other team in order to help their corners.
That’s it. That’s what we need to do. I believe. Trust me, I want to look at this as a trap game, as a game where we don’t bring the juice. But I won’t. I had thoughts for the past 49 years, but not this year. We will expose those corners for multiple TDs and big plays. We will shut them down and keep them out of the end zone. We will remain positively purple throughout.
