Halloween is right around the corner, but College Football fans will be getting some "treats" during Week 9, with a nice slate of matchups, and the unveiling of the first CFP rankings to follow the day after Halloween on Tuesday, Nov 1st.
The Playoff Committee may get to vote on which teams will be leading the CFP rankings on Tuesday, but fans can vote for who they think is the scariest mascot in all of College Football...
Sparky the Sun Devil (Arizona State) Willie the Wildcat (Kansas St)
Pistol Pete (Oklahoma St) Purdue Pete (Purdue)
Thurday, 10/27 - Late Night Game
#14 Utah @ Washington St - 10PM ET (FS1)
An interesting battle of possible 2023 QB Draft prospects as Utah's Cam Rising meets Washington St's Cameron Ward. Utah has come close to winning a big game on the road this season, but came up just short both times - at the Swamp in Week 1 and at the Rose Bowl in Week 6. Rising and the Utes are back in the PAC12 title hunt after their bigtime win over USC in Salt Lake City in Week 7, but Washington St is no slouch. The Cougars have lost their last 2, but are looking for a bigtime home win over a ranked team and winning in Pulman is no easy feat. I'm looking forward to watching this QB battle as I've had my eye on both QB's during this entire season. Rising needs to find a big road win and Ward needs to battle back from a few down games.
Saturday, 10/29 - Early Afternoon Games
#2 Ohio St @ #13 Penn St - Noon ET (FOX)
Sooner or later, Penn St are going to win one of these massive BIG10 East games they keep losing (they were pounded by Michigan earlier this year and HC David Franklin is 1-7 all-time vs the Buckeyes), and CJ Stroud is due for a tough outing. I think they gave Ohio St somewhat of an advantage keeping this game earlier in the day as Happy Valley at night is a very challenging atmosphere, but the Nittany Lions have experience on offense and have some playmakers on defense that could challenge Stroud. I'd love to see an upset here, especially right before the first CFP rankings come out.
Oklahoma @ Iowa St - Noon ET (FS1)
An interesting BIG XII game as the Sooners travel to Ames to take on the Cyclones. Oklahoma got its first Conference win over Kansas last weekend while Iowa St has yet to win a Conference game, but they've lost their four losses by a combined pt total of just 14 pts, meaning their solid, but can't close it out in the 4th. Let's see if the Cyclones can get their first Conference win this weekend and close out any chances of the Sooners going to any decent bowl game.
Saturday, 10/29 - Late Afternoon Games
Florida @ #1 Georgia - 3:30PM ET (CBS)
The "World's Largest Cocktail Party" is back again in Jacksonville as the up-and-down Gators take on the Bulldogs. I do think Florida will play this game like it's their Super Bowl and I wouldn't be surprised if this one ends up being a bit closer than people might think. Georgia has too much talent on both sides to lose this, Anthony Richardson is capable of giving the Georgia defense some problems. I think the viewing interest in this one is the development of Richardson, who will play against a team with the most NFL-talent he's likely to see all season - is Richardson ready to make the leap to the NFL in the offseason, or does he need some more seasong in Gainesville?
#9 Oklahoma St @ #22 Kansas St - 3:30PM ET (FOX)
Both teams have had close losses to BIG XII frontrunner TCU in the last few weeks and the winner here gets sole possession of 2nd place in the Conference. Spencer Sanders and the Cowboys defense have played solid all season, but the atmosphere in Manhattan is likely to be rockin'. The team that wins the turnover battle here will likely emerge victorious.
#17 Illinois @ Nebraska - 3:30PM ET (ABC)
The Fighting Illini have been cruising to the BIG10 West title and a trip to the BIG10 Championship game, but Nebraska has been playing better since they canned Scott Frost and it's possible Illinois could stub their toe a bit before a matchup with 2nd place team Purdue on 11/12 and a trip to Ann Arbor after that.
Saturday, 10/29 - Evening Games
#19 Kentucky @ #3 Tennessee - 7PM ET (ESPN)
The Vols get back-to-back games against the top dawgs of their division when they face the Wildcats on Saturday and then travel to Athens to take on Georgia next weekend. NFL scouts will be surely be on Rocky Top for this one as Round 1 2023 QB prospect Will Levis will battle Hendon Hooker, who's having a Heisman Trophy type of year. If the Wildcats are going to have any chance in this one, they'll have to slow down the top offensive team in the nation, and they've been doing it mostly without their top WR weapon who is due back any week. Will Levis needs to score TD's and not FG's because you know Hooker and the Volunteer's offense will be scoring in bunches. I think we're likely to see the "SEC Game of the Year 2.0" next weekend in Athens as #1 take Georgia could take on #2 Tennessee if Ohio St loses at Happy Valley earlier in the day.
QB Matchups to Watch:
Cam Rising (Utah) @ Cameron Ward (Wash St)
CJ Stroud (Ohio St) @ Sean Clifford (Penn St)
Max Duggan (TCU) @ JT Daniels (West Virginia)
Anthony Richardson (Florida) @ Stetson Bennett (Georgia)
Spencer Sanders (Oklahoma St) @ Adrian Martinez (Kansas St)
Will Levis (Kentucky) @ Hendon Hooker (Tennessee)
Tanner McKee (Stanford) @ Doriel Thompson-Robinson (UCLA)
