5-1. That’s how we begin the bye week. That’s what everyone should say; “Five and one” and STOP there. No “buts”. No “ifs”. Nothing negative. I suggest that when you say or think “5-1”, just let it go there. Nothing else needs to be added.
Oh, and be HAPPY! You could be a Packers fan at 3-3 with little hope in sight. You could be a Denver fan who in the off-season believed the messiah how come to Mile High. You could be the <insert any NFC West team except the Seahawks> who thought they would be ruling the roost at 5-1 themselves.
Not only are we 5-1, we are 2 games up in the division PLUS wins in hand against ALL division opponents. That’s like 2.5 games up. That’s exciting. Not only that, we are currently the 2nd seed in the NFC.
I know…I know. We’ve seen these hot starts before and we’ve seen them falter. It’s easy to doubt. We’ve been conditioned to be pessimistic. But you know what 50 years of negativity and waiting for the other ball to drop has gotten me as a fan? Nothing. So let’s try something new, shall we?
Here’s my positive spin (because looking for the bad, while easy, has never produced anything good).
(1) We will finish 1st in the north with an 12-5 record. We will be the 2nd seed chasing the Eagles once again like in 2017.
(2) The team will improve. They are only 6 games in on a new defense and a new offense. There will continue to be growing pains. However, I have faith that KOC and the rest of the staff will continue to get better in their planning and in game play calling.
(3) I don’t care about stats. I don’t care where the defense ranks or what Kirk Cousin’s yards per attempt is. Who gives a crap about any of that if after 60 minutes we have scored more points then our opponent?
Here’s the thing, we can perseverate over what the first 6 games means about the next 11 games. We could nitpick about this stat or that ranking but at the end of the day, we really don’t know what the outcomes will be. I mean, maybe they shouldn’t be 5-1 but then again, maybe that’s exactly what they have earned.
What we do know or can choose to focus on is not the what-ifs but the moment we are in. We are 5-1. Full stop. I choose to spend this bye week enjoying that fact. We’ll deal with game 7 when it’s game 7.
