Week 5. 2 NFC North teams stood at 3-1 enter this crucial week. Both team were home, although one was across the pond in London.
Green Bay seemingly had righted their ship from a disastrous week 1. 3 straight wins had erased an embarrassing lose to the division rival Minnesota and their first half against the Giants only solidified in the hearts of their fanbase that the Pack were back. GB held leads of 17-3 and 20-10 halfway thru the game. They looked unstoppable.
Minnesota seemingly had been holding on week after week to get to their 3-1 record. Two weeks ago, they overcame 2 double digit deficits to down the Lions and last week a double doink failed field goal attempt in the final minute toppled the Saints. Finally though, this week, they jettisoned to 21-10 halftime lead. They looked unstoppable against the Bears.
Then the second half came…..
Both Chicago and New York received the opening second half kickoff and subsequently produced points. In fact the 3rd quarter for each team was almost a mirror image of one another. In the 3Q, the Bears produced 10 points on 19 plays over 11 minutes. The Giants ran 17 plays with over 11 minutes possession scoring 10 points (technically, the 2nd possession extended into the 4Q but like the Bears, it was their 2nd possession of the half).
So here we are in the middle of the 4Q and both the Vikings and Packers had blown their leads. Minnesota took possession at their own 25 with 9:26 remaining trailing 22-21. Green Bay took over their own 25 with 6:08 remaining trailing 27-20.
What happens next may be a defining point in both their seasons.
Minnesota would embark on a 17 play, 75 drive that would vault them into the lead once again. Green Bay would go 69 yards in 14 plays and leave themselves 6 yards short. The Vikings would face 5 3rd downs and covert all of them. GB would face 3 thirds down and only covert 2. Cousins would go 6 of 8 on the drive. Rodgers was 5 for 10.
6 yards. That was the difference in their final drives. The Vikings finished their drive. GB failed. Perhaps it was just a another in the NFL were random happen for not so random reasons. I however, in my efforts to be Positively Purple for the first time in almost 50 seasons as diehard fan would like to think that maybe this finally the year where the little breaks go our way. When the play that has to be made gets played. Between double digit comebacks, tying field goals careening off goal posts, and the legendary QB of our era falling 6 yards short - I see it. Belief. Hope.
