For every opposing team the Vikings face this season, I'll be posting a PFF depth chart of their team. I think the charts do a nice job of showing not just who plays on which team, but how each player is doing and which players have proven themselves or not. Do remember that PFF ratings are not a perfect reflection of a player's talent/performance. There are plenty of ratings that I do not agree with, so keep that in mind.
Alright, let's look at the Saints' depth chart: (with help from the Saints website and Wikipedia NFL rosters)
-My thoughts-
The Saints are coming into this matchup missing several starters. Not only is starting WR Willie Snead suspended, but normally starting CB Delvin Breaux is on the IR too, DT Nick Fairley might have to retire due to a heart condition, and not to mention LS Jon Dorenbos (Dorenbos was taking a physical when the doctors discovered an aortic aneurysm in his heart. He needs immediate surgery, and the discovery of the issue likely saved Dorenbos' life. From Rotoworld) will probably retire too. Oh, and their starting left tackle is out. Yikes. The Vikings are coming in much more healthy and with a full starting lineup in comparison.
The Saints' offensive line looks OK, but the Vikings might be able to take advantage of it. First round rookie Ryan Ramczyk is starting at LT for Armstead - that has to be a weak point to target. Andrus Peat is a failed LT moving to LG, so there's no guarantee he improves there. C Unger is banged up too. We might scoff at the Vikings' lack of O-line depth, but the Saints have virtually zero depth, only two guys who have proven to be terrible and one complete unknown (Bryce Harris) who's already been cut twice this season.
On defense, the Saints' front 7 looks very lackluster but their secondary might surprise you. The other first round rookie Marshon Lattimore has been looking really good through the preseason, and P. J. Williams might take a step forward too. Vonn Bell is probably going to get better as he goes along and Vaccaro is a superb run stopper (though not the best in coverage). Picking on Ken Crawley in the slot should be a must. Meanwhile, the front 7 has Cameron Jordan... and that's it. Alex Anzalone has apparently been good so far and Rankins was injured for a chunk of last season, but the other 4 starters are going to be bad. The Saints really needed Fairley on the line - Tyeler Davison has proven to be a big liability.
What are your thoughts on the Saints? Are there any position groups that are underrated/overrated?
