Purple Insider Mailbag:
@headcoach21 Are you buying the Vikings are frauds narrative?? I feel like teams that win 12 games should be contenders right??
Calling them frauds is just kind of boorish. Here’s how I’m looking at that discussion… The fundamental question in football is: Are you good enough to win the Super Bowl? How do we figure that out? We look at the information that’s at our disposal, from their record to point differential to EPA/play to schemes to leadership to home-field advantage… everything. If you looked at everything except for the Vikings’ record and you sorted it all by what matters most (i.e. the most predictive stats and most important intangibles) you might come to the conclusion that the Vikings are a good team with a potentially favorable Super Bowl path if they get the No. 2 seed. If we agreed that Buffalo, KC or Philly are 10-out-of-10 in a 1-10 strength rating, the Vikings are probably a 7.5. Those teams have all the strengths and less of the weaknesses. But 7.5 teams beat 10 teams all the time in football. Anyone making them out to seem like they are a bad or mediocre team is really going out of their way to screw with the numbers. Any time you’re a top-10 offense with home playoff games, you’ve got a legitimate chance.

@palpatinesrobes I found your podcast with Aaron Schatz very interesting. While the Vikings are flawed, I would take issue with Schatz's view of them being the 18th best team. Does he consider grit to be a measurable factor? I think it explains the Vikings' success this year.
It’s funny because things that are thought to be intangible are pretty tangible most of the time. It’s all baked into the results.
I don’t see the Vikings as being a gritty team. They don’t run the ball well or grind teams down, they don’t frustrate opponents with physical defense. The 2015 Vikings, now that’s a gritty team. This is a flashy, experienced team. They rely on superstars making superstar plays at the biggest moments and dudes with experience not panicking. When opponents open the door, they knock it down. Could we call them opportunistic? That seems right.

@cdr164bn01 Are these guys truly a Bizarro Viking team? Throughout their history they play better when they're the underdog. They've lost three this year? They always miss the game winning FG? Not this year. I'm upside down and can't tell what the hell they're going to do in GB.
In a lot of ways, this is a typical Vikings team because there’s one every decade that nobody really sees coming and they do it in an unorthodox fashion. Usually they have a bunch of mediocre seasons and then one year it comes together, which is exactly how this year is going.
