Over the off season there was a lot of talk about how the coaching was holding this team back, particularly how it was limiting the passing game. The new McVay Jr was going to come in and change the culture, which he did, and open up the passing game, which he has not. Not even close.
Vikings Offensive DVOA through 4 weeks 2021: 13th
2022: 13th
Passing DVOA 2021: 12th
2022: 15th
Cousins 2021 Stats through 4 games: 1,031 yards, 6.6 YPA, 6 TDs 4 Ints, 84.1 rating
2022: 1,121 yards, 7.1 YPA, 9 TDs, 1 Ints, 105.6
The biggest difference between this season and last has been the lack of penalties on the Vikings, unforced errors by the opposition, and special teams. The unforced errors is a lot of luck and the result of half the teams the Vikings played being the Lions and a very dysfunctional Saints team, but the lack of penalties and good special teams play is all coaching. That means this team is being coached well and implies the issues are scheme and player execution of the scheme.
Both Zimmer and Spielman deserved to be fired. Rick, while he found some good players and didn't build a bad team had a lot of contracts and poor draft decisions that were holding this team back from becoming a SB contender. Zimmer, was clearly not the problem fans wanted him to be, but he also wasn't the solution we needed as evidenced by his team not being as disciplined as a first year HC has them.
Hopefully the discussion going forward can move past these two guys and we can start to look at what the current regime needs to do to make this team into a SB contender.
That was a good post!
