This topic is for every fan with enough guts to give their take on the 2017 draft. Much has been said on other threads, but people will want one place in the future to check what we thought now.
If you are already on record with statement, as many of you are from the draft and preseason topics, please don't change your tune to the current song.
My Quick Take On The 2017 Draft: Minniman
Dalvin Cook, Running Back – Florida St. | Round 2 Pick 9 (#41 overall) | 5′ 10 / 210 pounds
I stated that Cook would likely not be available by the time the Vikings picked. The Vikings believed so too, and they moved up in the second round to get him. Cook does not have the size of Leonard Fournette or the spring of Alvin Kamara, but Cook was likely the running back with most explosion to the hole in the draft, and that makes a big difference in the NFL. He has also shown good vision and hole selection.
Pat Elfein, Center – Ohio State | Round 3 Pick 6 (#70 overall) | 6’3″ / 303 pounds
Elfein is a good run blocker, but he is a bit undersized for a guard. His play at center in college was very good. He sustains blocks and has good technique. Round 3 was a good spot for him to get selected.
Jaleel Johnson, Defensive Tackle – Iowa | Round 4 Pick 2 (#109 overall) | 6’3″ / 316 pounds
I believe Jaleel Johnson has more upside than Shariff Floyd. Johnson can stuff the run and penetrate on the pass. Johnson was one of the players I had hoped the Vikings would select at that point, and they did.
Ben Gedeon, Middle Linebacker – Michigan | Round 4 Pick 14 (#120 overall) | 6’2″ / 244 pounds
I have given my reservations about Gedeon soon after the draft. On tape, he recognized plays and reacted well, but he tackled high and his coverage skills needed work.
I wasn't upset with this pick, but I wasn't enthusiastic either. Dede Westbrook was off the board, so that wasn't an option. The Vikings may have been able to wait a round for Gedeon.
Rodney Adams, Wide Receiver – South Florida | Round 5 Pick 27 (#170 overall) | 6’1″ / 189 pounds
Adams has slash and dash along with speed. His ball skills and size are question marks.
I am on record wanting Robert Davis in the later rounds, so one of the 5th round picks would have been good to pick up Davis (he went in the 6th round to Washington).
I likely would have taken G Danny Isidora here and selected Davis with the pick used on Isidora later in the 5th round.
Danny Isidora, Guard – Miami | Round 5 Pick 37 (#180 overall) | 6’3″ / 306 pounds
Since I posted this was one of the guys I wanted here, it was nice to see Isadora selected. He was a value pick in the 5th round.
Bucky Hodges, Tight End – Virginia Tech | Round 6 Pick 17 (#201 overall) | 6’6″ / 257 pounds
I asked openly during the draft why he had not yet been selected, so when the Vikings grabbed him, I was pretty happy with that. Hodges can play tight end or slot receiver. He has to work on his blocking skills.
Stacy Coley, Wide Receiver – Miami | Round 7 Pick 1 (#219 overall) | 6’0″ / 195 pounds
Coley is fast, but he has been a ball bobbler his whole career. I wanted the Vikings to use one of these picks on kicker Zane Gonzalez (Browns) and another on cornerback Jalen Myrick (Jaguars).
Stacy Coley was not a bad value pick; I just thought there was better potential elsewhere on the board.
Ifeadi Odenigbo, Defensive Line – Northwestern | Round 7, Pick 2 (#220 overall) | 6’3″ / 258 pounds
Odenigbo has some serious pass rushing skills, but his overall game needs a lot of help. Passing on Gonzalez again did not make me happy.
Elijah Lee, Linebacker – Kansas State | Round 7 Pick 14 (#232 overall) |6’3″ / 228 pounds
Lee has good ball skills, and he has good speed for a linebacker. He was good value here.
Jack Tohco, CB N.C. State | Round 7 Pick 27 (#245 overall) | 6’0″ / 202 pounds
I did not know much about this kid before the draft. I would rather have drafted Myrick earlier and hoped Odenigbo or Coley had dropped here.
Overall, and surprisingly, I was not too upset with this draft. I often have problems with the early selections, but this draft did not present major concerns early on.
