Welcome to the 2022-2023 NFL Season, Vikings Fans...and, after months of hopes, fears, biting our nails to the elbows, countless internet arguments, and endlessly having to find smaller words for discussions with Packer fans...we finally have that first game done and have seen what our team looks like under the KAM/KOC regime.
It looks pretty ****ing good out of the gate, as our Minnesota Vikings-1.5 point underdogs to the despise Green Bay Packers- went on to stomp the cheese mongers 23-7 in a contest that included some epic passiing, a heroic goal line stand, and the kind of defensive pressure that the Purple fans have barely dared dream of for a long time.
Unlike the last few years, the offense didn't quit after a 7 point lead. Unlike the last few years, the defense didn't squander points to end halves. The team looked up, involved, and absolutely in-it-to-win-it from go...and backed it up that whole way.
QB- Kirk had a good, solid day in his first start in the KOC system. I know there are some who expect him to throw 45 times per game and similarly expect him to average 400 yards per outing in the new system, but in this case...the offense was fairly balanced (32 passes to 28 rushes, IIRC), and he was able to balance risk/reward effectively. He obviously got great results from JJ, but I suspect he'll be spreading the ball around more in coming weeks.
WRs/TEs- Well, Justin Jefferson had a WILD game, 9 grabs for 184 yards (including a 64 yard in-stride bomb) and 2 TDs, nearly 3. Green Bay couldn't cover him, and he just stacked on the catches/yards. Behind him, a huge dropoff to the next-highest producer (Thielen, 3 grabs for 36) and just scraps after that. I'd figured that JJ would draw so much coverage that Thielen, Osborn, Smith Jr, and others would get big yards....maybe next week.
RBs/FB- Again, solid work from this crew...maybe not as impressive as we've seen from Dalvin and co. previously, but more than enough to keep GB's defense honest. Cook had 20 runs for 90 yards, including a 16 yard scamper through a frustrated Packer defense. New-dad Mattison added 8 runs for 36, doing his best bowling ball impression. Cook and Ham both added receptions, which further confounded a floundering and cheesy opposing defense.
O-Line- Ah, our source of constant woe and frustration for the last decade! In this case it was...better. Yes, I saw too much pressure get through the A gaps at times and yes, the youth of some players shows a bit, but Kirk had more time, and obviously had a better pocket to work with with the backs were hit in the backfield much less than in recent years.
D-Line/LBs- Oh, Allfather Odin...what gifts you have wrought! The combination of Hunter, Z. Smith, and Wonnum is already too much for any o-line to be expected to bear, but adding Kendricks and Hicks...damn, folks, that's just MEAN. All of the above (minus Kendricks) had sacks on
CBs/Safeties- On one hand, I saw GB receivers make mistakes more than I saw great coverage, so I with for improvement with this group. On the other hand, Harrison Smith got a great pick, Peterson had at least one very stout tackle that I recall, and Rodgers' entire crew only put up 7 points...so, maybe I'm being overly harsh.
Special Teams- We covered the kicks/punts decently, 'Greg the Leg' hit everything, and our rookie punter had a solid game. All good here!
Coaching- KOC had his head coaching debut against a bitter rival, one that's spent the last decade making deep playoff runs and was in the divisional round last season. All that said, he coached his team...OUR TEAM...to a huge victory and has answered a lot of prayers in doing so. The offense, defense, and STs all stepped up and did great jobs, so it's perfectly legit that Kevin got a game ball.
So...Philly next Monday night. They just beat Detoit, but they let the kitten put up 35 on 'em...really? 35?
I say we stomp the team and steal their sandwiches.
SKOL VIKINGS!!!!
