After almost 50 years of fandom, I am trying to maintain a positive attitude. I want to view things as a glass half full, not empty, as I mostly have as a Viking fan. So if I’m being honest, I found myself on Sunday waiting for the other show to drop.
Sure, we were up 20-0 but we’ve seen leads even bigger leads than that (see 2021 against Pittsburgh) dwindle to a single score. So when GB drove down and scored to make 20-7, I had a weak moment when I thought “Oh no, here we go”. Then, we got a first down and took almost 4 minutes off the clock. It was only 1 first down but it was HUGE compared to the past 2 seasons. Then the defense stepped up and recorded a HUGE sack on 3 and 7 near midfield. It was at that moment that a strange but familiar feeling started settling in into spirit and mood…
I realized that I started to feel like I did during the 2017 season. In 2017, I didn’t have that feeling of dread like the last two years, but I never get overly confident either. I just watched/followed the games essentially on a play by play basis either up or down. The defense would bend but not break. The offense would sustain drives but not really pull away. That’s how I felt yesterday; never to down or up except for the occasional doubt that crept in.
I think that’s when watching Vikings football is at its best - when I don’t feel too much either way. When Im not pacing back and forth, chewing the skin around my fingernails or screaming at the television. I just watch as small, positive plays happen.
I hope that feeling lasts all season. It certainly is more fun watching in a positively purple state of mind rather then with a pessimistically purple attitude. Let’s go! Skol.
