Kyle Sloter Discussion Thread

I agree with Boss in that we need to see Sloter play before we know anything about what he can do. Everything else is about what he did, or might do. Teddy threw a great long ball and ran a good 2 minute drill in preseason, but that doesn't mean it would carry over into regular season.

I believe his stock has risen considerably since then, and he passes the eye test. My overall point being, we're going to keep 3 QB's, whose issues we're already aware of, over the prospect. Am I the only one aware of this franchises ineptitude when it comes to finding QB prospects? Aware of our struggles at the QB position the past 4 decades? Now we have one and we're just going to throw him away to keep 3 guys around for 10 more games who aren't the future? This is why we can't have nice things.

Unfortunately, I think we're playing a numbers game.

a) we have to keep Case, because he is our current starter and is winning games
b) we have to keep Sam (active), because he looked like an all-pro week one and for all we know his mystery knee could clear up and he could return to week one form
c) we have to try to get Teddy on the active roster in case a) Case gets injured and/or b) Sam's knee never recovers

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that we may better serve ourselves (both now and in the future) by keeping all four QBs on the active roster for a few games (after Teddy returns) and cutting back from seven to six WRs. We will have a lot better chance of slipping Rodney Adams to the practice squad than Sloter. Two months from now we'll have a much better picture of where we stand with both Teddy and Sam. If either are still at less than 100%, then put one on IR and we still have three QBs.

You guys are making a lot of assumptions when it comes to Teddy.He's been back at full practice 2 days and already you have him on the active roster and staring games this season.

What if his knee doesn't stand up to the rigors of practice?
The guy is still wearing a brace for Pete's sake,slow down a bit until he can practice without the brace.
If he doesn't shape up within the next 3 weeks to a level where the Vikings are happy,then Teddy will be going to IR.

As to the first part; there was ample evidence to anyone who watched Tom Brady play at Michigan, that he was a damn fine QB. I was much more impressed by Tom Brady than I ever was by Drew Henson, and that Lloyd Carr sacrificed Brady to assuage Henson's ego and keep him from bolting to the Yankees is a travesty.

And you know what else? Tom Brady was drafted, by the Patriots-so they weren't going to take the chance that someone else would pick him up. They didn't place him on waivers, so that every team could have a shot at him.

To the second: If Denver is in win-now mode, and Sloter is the can't miss developmental prospect you think he is; why, how, could a personal guy like Elway-a guy who has built a Super Bowl winning roster-think Brock Osweiler is a better option should Siemian go down?

Answer that. It isn't a hypothetical situation. He had Kyle Sloter, and said "Nope. I want Brock Osweiler". He willingly exposed the guy to waivers-every team had a chance. And EVERY TEAM PASSED! 32 teams, for two weeks, could have grabbed this guy for the cost of a roster spot,but not one of them did!

You are willing to suspend disbelief enough to assume that Rick Spielman-drafter of Christian Ponder, drafter of Teddy Bridgewater, signer if Taylor Heinicke-is the NFL's pre-eminent mind when it comes to judging QB talent? Because that is what your post-combined with the above stated facts-implies. That only the Vikings realize how great Kyle Sloter may someday be? Anybody could have had him after he was waived AND while he was on the Vikings practice squad, and passed. Any team could have had him for a minimum, non-guaranteed contract, with no signing bonus (what he got when he was brought to the active roster). So, he is no financial burden. Those are facts. That means, pretty much by definition, that everybody thought the 2 or 3 QBs on their roster are better than him. So, the Vikings are supposed to be hitching their wagon to a guy most teams seem to believe is something like the 75th best QB available? That is your position?
Yeah, it sucks that Sam Bradford's knee is injured, and may always be, and will be a free agent after the season. Yeah, it sucks that Teddy Bridgewater's knee is a question mark and he wasn't great before, and may very well be a free agent after the season. Yeah, it sucks that Case Keenum is a above average BACKUP QB who will be a free agent after this season. But, the Vikings have 11 weeks of the regular season, 5 weeks of the playoffs and Super Bowl, and some 10 weeks of the off-season with which to evaluate, decide and sign anywhere from 1 to 3 of those guys, or to Target someone else via free agency, trade or the draft. And they better. Because no matter how pissed you may be if the Vikings lose Kyle Sloter-it is nothing compared to the MOTHER f*cking KRAKATOA!!! I will be if going into to 2018 our starting QB is Kyle f*cking Sloter-undrafted, unwanted, Broncos cast off-and future Hall of Famer.

Since I've been a Vikings fan there's been this irrational love for the 3rd string QB. You could build a Mount Rushmore of sh*tty 3rd stringers that people loved but didn't do anything.

John David Booty, McCloud Bethel Thompson, Todd Bauman... Has any 3rd string done anything that makes us regret losing him at any point?

You answered your own question. Its the Bethel-Booty-Thompson Theorem.  I'm surprised Reignman didn't find this when researching the Oliver Woofing Theorem.  This theorem states that whichever QB is least likely to see the playing field is automatically the most likely QB to carry us to a Super Bowl win. Its logic is unassailable, because there isn't any.
