I think he could go down the Case Keenum path - go undrafted and sit on the PS during year one, then push for a roster spot in year two and eventually become a backup QB within a couple years of that.

We never know, Sloter is very raw and needs the time to develop. I see about a 50-50 chance he is on the Vikings roster this year or next. Whether he is ready will be another point and all of us hope it does not come to that. The newby is exiting and the backup QB is usually one of the most popular players until they fail when needed.
If they have had good success in a limited role they are even more popular. Sloter was added because the Viking brain trust felt he was closer to being ready than the internal options and the Vikings could well have only 2 QB's returning next year.

I understand your skepticism, but I think you keep overlooking the circumstances of why he's only on the PS. The Broncos had to release him not because he was bad but because of circumstances beyond their control. And since we got him so late, he doesn't know the playbook nor does he have any chemistry with our players, so what are we supposed to do with him? Had he been here since training camp he might have won the backup job, but he wasn't, so practice squad it is. Who do we lose? Heinicke? Leidner? Doesn't sound like much of a gamble if that's the case.

I mean it's not like we traded away the future to get him. Seems like a pretty good move IMO. If he doesn't pan out, we will have lost nothing for the effort. Can't complain about them finally being aggressive or proactive with the QB position. I'm a bit relieved because it tells me they're not completely sold on Teddy being the future, which was the only sign I was looking for. They could have done what they always do, wait a few years to realize/admit their pet project is a bust before looking for the next guy and starting over. It's been a stupid strategy.

The fact that Heinicke and Leidner are both out tells how much the Vikings wanted this kid.

Sloter has the tools, but he needs to get up to speed, and that is a lot to ask of a player who has not even faced the best talent that college football has to offer.

Then again, all of the players he faced in the preseason were very good college players. He showed that he could get the job done at that level.

Against NFL starters? That is a different question.

Quarterback with deep area ties looks to make mark in NFL

Sloter, a rookie reserve quarterback with the Minnesota Vikings, was born in Georgia, where he lived until embarking on a college football career that began at Southern Mississippi and ended with a record-setting senior season at Northern Colorado.

But despite growing up in the heart of SEC country, when he reached seventh grade, Sloter began sporting an accessory that displayed an allegiance to a team that didn’t exactly have a strong local following.

“I started wearing a black, Iowa Hawkeye wristband and I still wear it today,” the 23-year-old quarterback said.

Though it might seem like an oddity at first, the soft spot Sloter carries for the Hawkeyes has a reasonable explanation.

“My entire family was born and raised in Iowa,” he said. “(The bracelet) is something I carry with me to remind me where I’m from and where my family’s from. I feel at least half Iowan myself.”

Sloter’s family roots in the state run several generations deep.
