But if that Purple Insider article is correct - meaning the following concluding statement turns out to be true: "The recent history of first-round receivers who did not take off in their first two years is not promising to the Vikings’ chances of discovering a gem" - then it's certainly possible the Vikings may have lost value in what they paid for Reagor compared to what they would have paid for Smith-Marsette.
I was curious if Raegor actually fit with the rest of those "first-round receivers who did not take off in their first two years":
Kevin White 21-193-0
Breshad Perriman 43-576-3
Philip Dorsett 51-753-3
Corey Coleman 56-718-5
Josh Doctson 37-568-6
Laquon Treadwell 21-215-0
John Ross 21-210-7
N'Keal Harry 45-414-4
Jalen Raegor 62-676-3
So Raegor is at or near the top of that list - but he hasn't really separated himself from all those "busts".
OTOH, what's the eventual outcome for "WRs picked in the 5th round who caught less than 6 passes in their rookie season"? (It might be KJ Osborn and no one.) Really, the safe money bet is that neither Raegor or Smith-Marsette will ever play in any Pro Bowls.
But I like some things recent trades show about the new regime:
1. They aren't hoarding day 3 draft picks like gold. It's as if KAM knows every pick is a gamble and that those after round 3 are an absolute crap shoot - so spend them on lottery tickets any time, not just during the fun of draft day.
2. They believe that better coaching and/or situation can "fix" talented players, because they now have three which were 1st or 2nd round picks but failing with other teams: Raegor, Blacklock, and Garrett Bradbury. I don't remember any attempted reclamation projects in the Zimmer years, am I forgetting some?
