My guess is that Udoh/Lowe, Villain and Boyd are placeholders until somebody better is aquired. Hope it's Udoh who goes and Lowe stays. He's got more upside as a swing Tackle. Boyd playing Slot if Sullivan gets hurt just made me throw up in my mouth a little.

It's also obvious that either the D-Line Coach or Donatell or someone is really talking up Otomewo.

That initial 53-man is unlikely to look the same come Week 1. I'm willing to be they make some waiver claims and hopefully land a few good depth pieces.

I'm still surprised on trading Watts for Blacklock; I get the 2 yrs left on his deal and saving $1.2m cap space in 2022, but I'm not certain Blacklock would provide better on-field production in 2022. I'm a bit more concerned about our run defense heading into Wk 1 w/ Blacklock, Lynch, Bullard as the other starting DE opposite Phillips or Tomlinson.

I'm guessing that whomever they add, Lowe and or Udoh will be the waived and perhaps signed to the PS.

I also think we could possibly make a claim for another OLB/EDGE to provide an upgrade over Vilain - I can't imagine anyone putting in a claim on him so he should easily clear waivers to the PS.

They're also probably planning to redshirt some of these guys and have them as weekly inactives - which is fine, but on other teams the likes of Otomweo or Vilain would be sent through waivers to the PS. Can't blame the new FO for being patient with their own prospects.

But yes, CB and TE are two spots I'd be looking to claim. A CB who can backup the slot and TE who can run a bit and actually catch the ball, preferably.

DT Mike Purcell is an interesting name cut today by Denver. He had a great year in 2019, and Denver signed him to a 3-yr deal worth $14.8m and although he didn't live up to that 2019 season in 2020/2021, his run-defense grades were a respectable 65.0 and 65.9, respectively. Purcell is a bit older at 31, but has better run-defense grades than Bullard and James Lynch and would be a quality depth NT behind Tomlinson.

He's been graded against all other WRs, and he did have a pedestrian 1.3 yards per route run, and was not that effective when Thielen left. I thought he was more average to above avg but that's PFF for you. I think he's in for a big 2022.

Hicks is probably closer to below average, he's been bad in coverage for years and he's now past his prime.

I've been trying to keep an eye out for slot/nickel CB depth and can't seem to find too much out there. I was hoping Buffalo would try to sneak Cam Lewis through waiver, but they went with Nick McCloud who showed promise in 2021, but plays more outside.

Tennesee's Chris Jackson migth be worth a look: 386 snaps in 2021 (mostly in the slot) and RDEF/TACK grades were elite at 81.9 and 86.3 respectively, but only a 52.2 COV grade (which was still 20 pts above his poor rookie year in 2020). He could be on the rise as he only has 2 years in the league. Jackson was also born in Minneapolis so there's a small connection to Minnesota.

In terms of an upgrade over Vilain at the 5th OLB/EDGE spot, San Francisco waived both Jordan Willis and Kemoko Turay and either would be an upgrade over Vilain at the 5th OLB/EDGE spot.

Vikings trying to build depth. Still not deep but deeper than last year. Something has to be coming more than Blacklock after the Watts cut, don't you think?

Interesting, FS Marcus Epps beat out FS Anthony Harris in Philly. Would Harris be better than Metallus in the new scheme?

Dont'e Deayon (Rams) is still a FA. He grades better than Sullivan according to pff and has to be better than Chris Boyd.

Another possibility for depth at the slot CB position is former Jets DB Javelin Guidry. He went undrafted in 2020 out of Utah and ended up appearing in all 17 games for the Jets in 2021. He has solid #'s for his first 2 seasons in the league: 28 total games appearances (starting 5), 70 combined tackles with 48 solo tackles, 1 TFL, 2 QB hits, 4 forced fumbles and 3 passes defended. He also plays ST and had a ST snap count of approx 30% in 2020 & 2021.

Guidry's PFF grades were better in 2020 when he played more slot than CB, too:

2020 - 172 snaps, 132 from slot:
DEF-73.1
RDEF-57.6
TACK-76.7
PRSH-62.3
COV-76.5

2021 - 487 snaps, 247 from CNR and 122 from SLOT (rest from inside BOX):
DEF-55.9
RDEF-53.2
TACK-67.5
PRSH-53.3
COV-56.8

His coverage grades went down in 2021, but he played more outside and at 5'9", he's probably a bit more suited to play inside and in 2020, he shined there. Even when his coverage grades went down in 2021 when he played outside, his tackling grades still remaind solid, so it appears he could be a solid depth slot/nickel CB who can play on ST coverage units, as well.
