Week 1 of the preseason is in the books and while some players did play well, there isn't a player on the team who will benefit from what happened Sunday as major decisions on a players status on the team can only be hurt by week 1 play in the preseason. Guys who were already on the bubble will remain their unless they played poorly enough to get cut and the only way anyone moved up the depth chart will be if a guy, like Mond, had someone play lousy enough ahead of them that they got moved down.
With that in mind, here are the people who lost big Sunday:
#1 Fans who believed we could learn anything positive from Week 1 of the preseason. You deluded yourself once again and now realize how stupid looking for positive signs in a meaningless preseason game is. The only things that you can realistic draw conclusions from in the preseason is bad play, and even that is very hit or miss.
#2 Troy Dye. He is even worse in a 3-4 than he was in a 4-3 and couldn't cover a pebble with a king sized blanket. Hopefully he doesn't make the team.
#3 Coaching. 8 penalties compared to the Raiders 4 and the team did not come out prepared to play, getting steamrolled in every facet early. I am not as concerned about getting rolled over early since the 4 best players on both sides of the ball weren't playing, but the penalties show a lack of discipline. Hopefully that is cleaned up by Week 1.
#4 Mannion. A backup QB should play as well against the 2's and 3's as the starter does against the 1's. He wasn't horrible but he was worse than Mond and should get moved down to the 3's and then off the team in final cuts.
#5 Alexander Mattison. He does a nice job in blitz pickup and will probably remain the #2 back for that reason alone, but he might be the 4th best RB from a pure running the football standpoint on the team. He is nothing special and I am hoping Chandler gets the start when Cook misses the 2-3 games he misses every season.
#6 Jesse Davis. He needed to play well to stay ahead of the indicted child rapist the Vikings want to win the starting job and he apparently didn't. Ingram highlights sure don't look all that impressive to me, but I guess chipping on a double team and standing up a guy in contain is really good RG play, so what do I know.
