We have 3 division games in the first 5 games. This is huge. Many claim that our season hinges on the how the defense performs with a focus on the secondary. I would argue that the secondary’s performance relies heavily on the D - Lines ability to put pressure on the QB.
So let’s use PFF to look at how our DLine could fair against the current OLines of division rivals. FYI, I have not previewed these numbers. I am discovering things as I write them.
GREEN BAY
Rodgers has a problem. Not only is his receiving core young and unproven, his 2 tackles are currently out.
INTERIOR
VIKINGS Overall Run Pass
Phillips 75.2 78.9 58.2
Tomlinson. 74.9 68.1 72.8
Watts 61.6 45.1 70.9
PACKERS
Runyan 64.6 57.4 72.0
Myers 54.9 49.4 65.9
Hanson 62.8 60.0 79.2
GB should be able to hold up inside with their pass blocking. I’ve heard that they have been touting their RB duo but I can’t see how they can run inside.
EXTERIOR
VIKINGS Overall Run Pass
Smith (2020) 76.7 60.5 86.0
Hunter 80.8 64.0 77.4
PACKERS
Nijman 63.2 58.6 66.9
Newman 55.7 51.9 60.2
On the edges, Minnesota has the advantage in both the run and the pass. Rodgers should have tremendous pressure on him coming from the edges. They can’t double team both.
Overall, our interior outmatches GB in 2 to 1. The exterior dominance entirely. This sets up a situation where GB should not be able to run effectively and set a clean pocket.
DETROIT
INTERIOR
VIKINGS Overall Run Pass
Phillips 75.2 78.9 58.2
Tomlinson. 74.9 68.1 72.8
Watts 61.6 45.1 70.9
LIONS
Jackson 69.3 76.4 56.4
Ragnow 86.7 90.2 73.9
Vaitai 68.4 65.4 66.9
Surprising, right? Don’t underestimate the Lions. They have a strong interior line and May gets push in the run game. Our LBs may have to come up huge in this game. We gain some ground back in the passing game.
EXTERIOR
VIKINGS Overall Run Pass
Smith (2020) 76.7 60.5 86.0
Hunter 80.8 64.0 77.4
LIONS
Decker 75.5 66.8 84.0
Sewell 77.0 84.5 69.4
Yep - happened again, didn’t it? The tackles of the Lions are pretty darn good. We hold slight edges in the pass game but again, it’s the run game that I am concerned with as Sewell is a force.
Overall, I am more concerned about the Lions than the Packers. With this Lions game, it seems our LBs will have to be more active in the room game and the DBs are going to have to cover their butts off.
CHICAGO
INTERIOR
VIKINGS Overall Run Pass
Phillips 75.2 78.9 58.2
Tomlinson 74.9 68.1 72.8
Watts 61.6 45.1 70.9
BEARS
Whitehair 66.2 66.3 61.3
Patrick 57.5 54.2 64.3
Schofield 66.8 59.5 75.2
We should dominant on the inside. We dominant on a 2-1 ration both in the run and the pass. With a young QB, the interior just need to get his feet moving which they should be able to do.
EXTERIOR
VIKINGS Overall Run Pass
Smith (2020) 76.7 60.5 86.0
Hunter 80.8 64.0 77.4
LIONS
Reiff 67.3 70.0 58.4
Jenkins 47.5 62.7 54.6
The pocket should be collapsing from the outside all game long. The numbers show that we dominant. There is opportunity on the edges for Chicago to run.
Overall, we should have no problem putting tremendous pressure on a young QB as well as holding steadfast against the run.
SUMMATION
As far DLine vs Division, the Lions are the team out of the 3 that I am concerned about. Their line appears to be on paper to be very good.
Green Bay has Rodgers and he makes up for a lot of deficiencies but even he can only cover so much. Their line has issues against our line. If the numbers hold true, I see a lot of long down situations and a lot of short routes to compensate how much better our DLine is against their line.
Chicago is who they are. They have a young QB and every indication is that our DLine should be able to make him very uncomfortable. They might have some success in the run but not nearly enough to compensate for the passing game issues.
