Most late round picks don't develop into guys you actually want starting for your team so I don't even really blame Spielman or Zimmer for those. Generally, if you are expecting a bunch of late round picks to contribute significantly to your team, it is going to be a .500 at best team unless you are really lucky.
Agreed...to an extent. I did say "late round" but what is the success rate for "mid round" picks? The guys I mentioned above (Johnson, Holmes, Crichton) were picked in the 3rd and 4th rounds. I think those are rounds where good teams hit on guys at a decent rate and build their bench strength. Vikings picked 22 in those rounds during the Zimmer era, and got a stud - Hunter - with one of them. But the second best in those rounds was either Cam Dantzler or Pat Elflein, and both had just one good year. (I know, we haven't given up on Dantzler, but his sophomore slump didn't help Zimmer). So the experience in those rounds matches what I said: 22 picks generated 1 shiny bit of cream on top (Hunter), 2 short-term starters, 3 subs that were OK (Jerrick McKinnon, Ben Gedeon, Alexander Mattison), and 16 picks with very little contribution.
