Yeah that's the problem, the new regime seems to be high on drafting project players like the old regime, more is better, and even if O'Connells staff is better at developing those projects than Zimmer, it's still not the best route to a Super Bowl. It's the best route if the plan is to remain "competitive" year in and year out. AKA compete for the 7th seed and avoid ending up like Detroit.
I think it's pretty clear that you need to draft impact players if you want to win one of those Super Bowls. You need the sexy picks. The game changers. Those are the guys that fill the trophy case. If not draft them, spend a ton on them in free agency, but this regime didn't have anything to spend and all we got was a handful of backup quality players to compete with backup quality starters. Then we double down on acquiring more underwhelming quality players in the draft? Add those to a roster that already hasn't won anything and how does that add up to a championship?
Kwesi just isn't ruthless enough, he's timid, and his big brain doesn't appear to be giving us any sort of advantage either. He's soft spoken and wants everyone to like him, and it's starting to show where it matters. Owned by Cousins at the negotiating table, and then by Detroit in the draft. This regime isn't here to take chances, it just wants to keep the SS Mediocrity afloat. Or maybe it's hoping O'Connell is the 2nd coming of Bill Walsh and can turn all these underwhelming ingredients into a championship? It's a very safe strategy. But hey, after 61 years you'd think we were due for some luck. Which might be our only hope at this point lol.
