EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Vikings left tackle Matt Kalil is becoming a liability for the offense.
The former Pro Bowler seems to have struggled most in pass protection, and that was a problem again Sunday in the Vikings' loss to the Saints in New Orleans.
After a down year in his second season and after struggling through the preseason in this his third NFL season, Kalil needs to have a shorter memory, head coach Mike Zimmer said.
"He allows one play to affect the second play sometimes. You know, he needs to be like a corner sometimes: have a short memory, forget it and let's go," Zimmer said.
"He's got all the physical tools. I'm not saying it's mental, but I just think sometimes when he has a bad play -- it's like a golfer when he misses a putt and then he goes up on the tee box and has a bad drive.
"We're all going to have bad plays. He has enough athletic ability and physical skills and mental toughness; he has all those things. Now, he can't compound it by making another mistake."
Kalil explained away his struggles in the preseason as experimentation with different sets. But now it seems he's allowed a trio of rushers to get the best of him, from Robert Quinn to Chandler Jones and most recently Junior Galette.
Getting Kalil back to his Pro Bowl form from 2012 would be a great boost for the Vikings (1-2) as they turn to rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
