This isn't a popular opinion, but going into the draft the Vikings have a pretty significant need at RB, as an upgrade at the backup spot and as insurance for 2023 for Cook if he takes a step back this year. Mattison has gotten worse each of his 3 seasons in the NFL, is a FA after the 2022 season and his pathetic 3.6 YPA in 2021 just doesn't cut it for me.
Despite the narrative, Cook has actually been very durable as a RB outside of his rookie season, and has the 2nd most rushes of any RB since 2019. That is both a good and a bad thing, since it shows he can hold up to lots of hits, but also means he has taken a lot of hits and is set to breakdown any year now. He is also due 14 million, in 2023 and the Vikings could save about 8 million if they cut him as they continue to struggle to stay under the cap.
The Vikings need to start thinking about replacing Cook and who better to that than Cook? His production at Georgia wasn't great, he wasn't a full time starter until this past season where he only put up 800 yards, but his YPA was outstanding all 4 seasons and he didn't take a lot of hits having only started that one season. He is actually faster than Cook was coming into the draft and only needs to fill out his build to become an every down back like his brother. Something he would have time to do as he waits in the wings, contributing as a change of pace speedster while his brother takes the bulk of the carries until 2023 when he can take over bigger, meaner and ready to take over where his brother left off.
