And if so, by how much?
Horrible Harry Phillips is the NT. That's what he was with the Bills. And I believe his run stuffing grade on PFF was higher than any season Pierce has produced. And he's hopefully Available, an ability that wasn't Michael's strong suit.
Also, Phillips doesn't offer much in the way of pass rushing pedigree, so why sign him to play DE?
Krauser mentioned on the DN that Tomlinson is an ideal 5T or 4i in a Saban 4-2-5 Scheme, which Minnesota profiles to be in a lot. J. Lynch might develop as the other DE opposite of Dalvin when they're in the 3-4 on running downs. On tweener downs in the 3-4 Watts is in for pass rushing.
But when they're in the 4-2 it's Hunter, Tomlinson, Phillips, Smith with Hicks and Kendricks. Can that group, with some Hitman Harry help, perform better than last year's group?
One of the reasons I say 'Yes' is how adamant Donatell was about setting hard Edges. Something Hunter is good at and Wonnum is legit terrible at. I mean, DJ got blocked out of a run lane by Cooper freaking Kupp. Hunter being back helps.
And Hicks is stronger against the run than Vigil or B. Lynch. And unlike Barr he's generally Available.
Phillips to me is a net upgrade over Pierce in both performance and Availability. Hicks is an inarguable upgrade over Vigil/Lynch and over Barr in terms of Availability.
With Donatell focusing on setting edges and gap discipline I thinks it's hard for the Run D to not improve. Low 20s. Maybe even towards the middle of the pack.
The key is health. Tomlinson slides to NT if Phillips goes down. And that means major snaps for either Watts or Lynch. If Hicks goes there is no viable replacement on the Roster currently, IMO. If Wonnum plays big minutes things get bad fast.
The reason this is so important is that I believe Teams will look at Hunter and Smith and say to themselves that they're going to need to slow those two down. And nothing does that better than a good running game.
This changes a bit if the Vikings pick a Front 7 Player on Day 1 or Day 2, which should provide some depth.
What do you all think?
