Shrine Bowl 2022

The Shrine Bowl practices are over after 4 days (Sat 1/29 thru Tues 2/1); the players have an "off" day on Wednesday before the actual game on Thursday evening at 8PM ET on the NFL Network (Thursday Night Football returns).

This is a really good article from the folks at the Steelers Depot site (link) - they broke down the winners & losers from all the 1-on-1 OL/DL drills throughout the practice week. As always, they have some film on each of them (practice footage), too.

OL Winners from 1-on-1 drills:
- Tyrese Robinson, OL, Oklahoma (6'2", 318); 23 starts at RG, 14 at RT
- Ryan Van Denmark, OT, UConn (6'6", 302); 3 yr starter at LT (long and lean)
- Kellen Diesch, LT, Arizona St (6'6", 299); long and lean transfer from Texas A&M, not a bunch of starting exp
- Luke Wattenberg, IOL, Washington (6'4", 293); 4-yr starter so a ton of experience (LG & OC); size is a big concern for me
- Cordell Volson, OL, North Dakota St (6'6", 319); FCS All-American; played all OL spots except OC
- Jean Delance, OT, Florida (6'3", 296); 36 1/2" arms (one of the longest); 3-yr starter mostly at RT
- Xavier Newman-Johnson, IOL, Baylor (6'1", 303); versatility at all 3 IOL spots

DL Winners from 1-on-1 drills:
- Eyioma Uwazurike, DL, Iowa St (6'5", 319)
- Jeffrey Gunter, EDGE, Coastal Carolina (6'4", 259); not a speed rusher; 3X All-Sun Belt selection
- De'Shaan Dixon, EDGE, Norfolk St (6'4", 251); opposite of Gunter as he's primarily a speed rusher
- Thomas Booker, DL, Stanford (6'3", 310); plays all over DL and ST, too
- Matthew Butler, DL, Tennessee (6'3", 299); could play multiple spots on DL; consistent in production and improved pass rusher

Notable Losers from 1-on-1 Drills:
- Alec Lindstrom, C, Boston College (6'3", 294); this was one of those Day 2 "gets" as Lindstrom was considered one of the C's to come off the board after Linderbaum. But like Linderbaum, being under 300 lbs for a C had me concerned and this quote from the article says it all: "He is undersized and it showed with defenders yanking him out of the way and pushing him back in the pocket. He's going to struggle with NFL DT's". I got one word after reading that: "nope"....
- Josh Selztner, IOL, Wisconsin (6'4", 302); you often don't see Wisconsin OL prospects on "losers" list during practice week

Players that stood out from the game itself
- Jack Coan, QB, Notre Dame: Jack Coan went 10 of 13 for 91 yards and a touchdown in a little more than a quarter of work. He led the West offense right down the field on its opening drive, going 5 of 6 for 49 yards before the East was able to come up with a big goal-line stand. The West scored on its next possession, with Coan leading the way on a 56-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard TD pass to Oregon State tight end Teagan Quitoriano.
- Ty Chandler, RB, North Carolina: Chandler broke free for runs of 21 and 16 yards on Thursday. He ran 11 times in total for 69 yards and added an eight-yard reception but did fumble in the third quarter (fortunately, the West team recovered the loose ball). He showed good vision and an ability to hit the hole quickly and get upfield.
- Jashaun Corbin, RB, Florida St: added 8 rushes for 50 yards with a TD.
- Pierre Strong, Jr, RB, South Dakota St: made a 65-yard TD catch to get the East on the board in the third quarter. Strong impressed all week in practice as both a running back and receiver but had just one rush for 4 yards in the first half as the West controlled the ball.
- Jelani Woods, TE, Virginia: Woods has been one of the standouts all week, drawing comparisons to the Colts' Mo Alie-Cox. Woods finished with three catches for 30 yards and the score. He also made a great play reeling in an onside kick attempt, tipping the ball to himself as he was falling to the ground. It was a fitting end with one of the standout players of the week making a special teams play to clinch the win, as so many of these prospects will need to excel on special teams to make an NFL roster next fall.
- EJ Perry, QB, Brown: EJ Perry did his best to bring the East squad back after being named the team's QB practice player of the week. The Boston College transfer went 13 of 18 for 241 yards and 3 TDs, as he was named the game's Offensive MVP after entering the game in the second half. Brown was able to hit a couple second-level passes and push the ball downfield, getting the East team get back in the game.
- James Houston, LB, Jackson St: was another bright spot for the East as he had a big hit in the run game, stopping Ty Chandler for a loss. He was also able to put pressure on Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy in the fourth quarter. Houston is an intriguing prospect after transferring from Florida. He had 16.5 sacks last season for head coach Deion Sanders.
- Samori Toure, WR, Nebraska: caught two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the East was able to get within a point. He used a nice spin move after making a catch for the first score, and the second came on an out-and-up with North Carolina CB Kyler McMichael in coverage. Toure impressed with his ability to create separation using his athleticism all week in practice.

Top 5 Shrine Bowl week standouts
- Kyle Philips, WR, UCLA: No player turned more heads at Shrine Bowl practices than Kyle Philips. The guy was completely unguardable in every part of practice. He won almost all of his one-on-ones all week and was flying all over the field, catching passes everywhere in team drills. Even on top of his ability to create separation and win his matchups, Philips was just really impressive catching the ball.
- Matthew Butler, IDL, Tennessee: Matthew Butler had a really nice week of practice after having his best season at Tennessee in his extra year of eligibility. He was a leader in his five years with the Vols, and that’s a role he continued to fill in his time in Las Vegas.
- Ty Chandler, RB, North Carolina: In the four days of practice leading up to game day on Thursday, Chandler looked like the best running back of the group. He had really good burst out of the backfield, exploding from the mesh point for solid yards every time he got the ball.
- Jelani Woods, TE, Virginia: The tight end demonstrated a good feel for his routes in Las Vegas and used that massive frame and the good ball skills he has to haul in plenty of catches. For a team looking for a tight end that can create havoc with his big mismatch potential, Woods is that guy to a T.
- Charleston Rambo, WR, Miami: Charleston Rambo had a really nice week in Las Vegas, capping off what’s been a really good season for him at Miami. After beginning Shrine Bowl practices with what ended up being the catch of the week, the receiver only continued to shine. He was winning one-on-one drills consistently with his clean route-running, good hands, and a release package that was among the best of any Shrine Bowl receiver.
