It seems pretty bad this year. In fact, if it weren't for Darrisaw and Bynum, the Vikings might be setting records this year. But it hasn't really been a trend in the Zimmer era. As you can see, it's been pretty up/down the past 8 years.
This doesn't include special teams snaps, only offense/defense. Nor does it include UDFA snaps, due to a lack of info and my combined laziness. There might be some UDFA freaks that I missed who throw the charts out of whack, but we'll just pretend this is about drafted rookies anyway.
Here's how 2021 compares to the rest of the league:
And the entire Zimmer era combined:
I only have snap counts going back to 2012, so that 2016 season was the 2nd lowest in the NFL these past 10 seasons. 2021 is only the 25th lowest out of 320 teams, believe it or not.
At the other end of the spectrum, last years squad comes in at 12th over the past 10 years. Jefferson, Gladney, Dantzler, Cleveland, and Wonnum all playing significant time.
That's quite the swing from one year to the next. 2015 to 2016 was similar. Playing rookies doesn't seem to have any bearing on whether we make the playoffs or not either. Rookies played a lot last year and we went 7-9, this year they didn't and we still went 7-9.
2021 Vikings Rookie Snap Leaders:
That's 698 offensive rookie snaps out of a possible 12,023 (11 x 1093), and 298 defensive snaps out of 12,386 (11 x 1126). For a 4.1% total.
The 2016 rookies (Treadwell, Morgan, Beavers, Kearse, Alexander, and Weatherly) combined for a Zimmer era low of 301 snaps. For comparison, the rookies on the 2012 49ers record low squad, only played a total of 102 snaps all year.
