Also, let's play the odds game for a sec. What are the odds that you solve QB through the draft or FAcy over the next couple years vs. solving other positional problems in that time via those outlets.
If they have any interest whatsoever in not tanking then they need to keep Cousins. But make the commitment one way or another. And right now I feel like they've got enough skill players and talent on this team to justify keeping it together.
Here is why I think there is a legitimate Super Bowl window right now:
Salary cap: currently $15m over, here are 3 moves I think are likely:
- Extend Cousins: +$20M.
- Rework Hunter's deal, adding money to 2023, new years and dollars and most importantly, convert his $18m roster bonus to a signing bonus: +$13M
Those 2 alone take the Vikings from -15M to +18M. These two moves are obvious and the contracts were set up to make renegotiating easy this offseason.
- Finally (this is the one I'm least sure on) don't pay Harrison Smith's $8M roster bonus. +~$6m. Smith isn't a $13M/year safety anymore and I think they can find a replacement for less than $6M.
That puts the team at ~$25M cap space. Compared to the positions they need:
- DE: premium cost position
- CB: high cost position
- S: medium cost
- LB: medium cost
- WR2/3: medium cost
- G: low cost
- TE2: low cost
That's before we even get into the possible development of guys like: Patrick Jones II, Danarious Robinson, ISM, Chaz Surratt (IMO, those are the 4 with the best odds to be real contributors).
Then look at how far the team has to climb to be serious challengers. How many games were they soundly beaten in last year? My count is:
- Browns: came down to the last play, but the Browns looked stronger most of the gane
- 49ers: never had an answer for Deebo Samuel
- Packers: wasn't happening
So with $25M in cap space + better coaching, can they catch those 3 teams while keeping pace with the others? I think yes.
