2022 QB Options: Supply vs. Demand (Keep Kirk!)

San Fran wins playoff games with a bottom 10 QB. Cousins isn't our problem. We don't even need a QB as good as Cousins with our skill players. We need a defense and a new set of eyes. It's still a team sport. Not that a HOF QB isn't the biggest advantage... But not a must to be good.

They should get rid of Cousins. We don't want to be any good next year. We want as many 2023 draft picks as possible and we want the highest draft pick possible. We won't get that with Cousins on the roster. Also, the longer Cousins is here, the more people in the building will find excuses to keep him even longer. Trade him, reduce his cap hit, get him out of here and start over.

This is a really tough decision. There's good arguments on both sides.

For me, I think it comes down to what it requires to lower Kirk's cap hit for this year. If he plays hardball, to me thar goes against him really wanting to be here long term. My naive hope is he just shaves money off this year in good faith without a multi-year all guaranteed contract.

Absent that, I think this is a seller's market. I think we could easily get a 1st and 3rd for him. If the qb class really is weak, take one later this year and a other higher next year if it doesn't work out.

But... the odds are high it will end badly in a new regimes first year if we gamble with a combo of Mond and duct tape and rookies at the qb spot.

It's largely set compared to the defense. Adding a couple of pieces on offense is a lot different than whatever it is we need to do with the defense at this point. ...pray? 

I don't like the idea of taking a step back. For what? We were told all season this was primarily a coaching issue. Then prove it. Come out next season and win 10 games. Get into the playoffs. Do that as a quarterback develops. Again, this new coaching staff is likely going to prioritize offense, so, developing a QB should be doable. But why not win games as that is happening? Cousins is the best option, if he takes a team-friendly deal. 

As far as wasting Jefferson, if anyone buys into the Diggs stuff at all, then it needs to be in the back of your mind somewhat. Forget Diggs, though. Realistically, Jefferson is still young and naïve. As that naivety wears off a bit, he's going to start caring more about the business side of it: his next contract, performance bonuses, his brand, etc. If the playoff wins aren't coming, this will become more of a focus. That's the reality of this league. 

As of now, he wants to win. That's his #1 priority. He wants to be in the playoffs and win there, too. Yes, as a competitor, that'll always be a top priority, but, as the years go by, the business side takes over. If we're still missing the playoffs and Jefferson isn't putting up similar numbers as he was in his first two seasons, frustration will build. Are there any young/developing QBs who have a WR who has had over 3,000 yards and 17 TDs the past two seasons? Or has done that over the last decade or so? I would imagine it's not commonplace, and that's why taking a step back is less than ideal. Currently, I'm not at all nervous about Jefferson moving on, but it's a different conversation if we have a couple more losing seasons and he's not putting up the same numbers when he's in line for a new contract, isn't it? The Vikings can't afford to screw this up. We need a quarterback who is ready to win now. 

We have a QB who is ready to win half his games now.  That isn't good enough for JJ, and most importantly, it isn't good enough for the fans.  Or at least it shouldn't be.

Regardless of how we got to Kirk at 45 million a year next year we are there, I dont really get the point of even making that argument. I get it he will likely be extended or traded hes not going to play at that number next year. Me personally im not extending Kirk, the experiment should be over just like Zim and Rick. They all are tied together. Ill take my chances with the new GM and coaching staff drafting and developing their guy, or Mond. We havent won anything with Kirk and have missed the playoffs the last two years. I get its not all his fault by any means but the teams ceiling has a chance to go way up with a new guy you draft, rather than trying to build the perfect team with Kirk. If Kirk wants to make 20 million a year to try and let the GM build a team around him Id think about it, other than that see ya later.
