The 2022 QB carousel is already being talked about as maybe more movement than last year and I was thinking if the Vikings go into rebuild mode or simply to get out of Kirk's cap number, Kirk could very easily be a trade target. So here is an early look at who may be available and who is in need of a new QB.
Of the 32 teams I would say there are 9 locks, 2 pretty solids, and 5 top rookies from 21 draft that will almost surely be starting in 22. They are Brady, Mahomes, Allen, Muray, Dak, Stafford, Herbert, Burrow, and Jackson as locks. Tanneyhill and Wentz should be safe as well and the 5 rookies, Lance, Lawrence, Fields, Wilson, and Jones.
That leaves half the league looking for their franchise QB/QB of the future with no big time QB prospect comming out in the draft, or a FA that stands out as a prize to be signed.
So who is need of a QB? Also who has the cap space to make a big splash?
Miami Dolphins... Tua has been ok at best? at $74M in capspace they have tons of room to try to upgrade. They traded away their 1st round pick but they have 49ers so they could draft one if they fall in love.
Washington redskins I mean Football Team... I really have enjoyed watching Heinike play but they would probably like to upgrade. $61.7M in cap space makes them players if they want to be. Currently picking 9th.
Seahawks are $56M under the 22 cap with all sorts of rumors about big changes to come in Seattle. It they moved off Wilson it would make him a top QB target for needy teams. Toss up between Wilson and Rodgers as top QBs with Deshawn Watson right there as well. (all would have to be traded)
The Colts could move off Wentz with $53M cap space if they choose but I think Reich likes him at QB and would want to give him 1 more year.
Next are the Denver Broncos, they have been rumored to be all over Rodgers since last summer and with $48M in cap space they can make it happen but if they wiff on Rodgers they would likely go for another QB as Teddy and Lock just have not gotten it done.
The Steelers are next in Cap space and likely in dire need of QB help with Rothlisberger anouncing he is likely done. At $43M in cap space they will be making moves.
Vegas Raiders have $42.9 and may be ready to move on from Carr. Tons of changes coming in Vegas QB change could be a fresh start.
The Browns have $39.6 in cap space and 5th year option decison on Mayfield due.
Lions have $36M and Jared Goff with a huge cap number. They also have the #2 pick and the Rams 1st round pick.
Texans have $34M and are picking 3rd, Panthers $28M picking 7th, Eagles $14M, Falcons $12.5, and the Giants at $2M are just above the cap with a real need to upgtade at QB.
Then there are Vikes curently below the cap but would be looking if they move Kirk. A trade would create some cap space but we need CBs DEs and S just to get the D back to servicable.
Lastly the Saints may need a QB but they are currently $62M over the 22 cap, OUCH!
So looking toward Jan 10th and beyond, it's gonna get very interesting this offseason.
