Which do you take: the deal you outline or #12 to New Orleans for: #16 + #49 (2nd Round)?
Also, I tend to think that New Orleans made the trade with Philadelphia for not one, but two possibilities: either to move up for a QB in case there's a run in the Top 10 and they don't want to be left out, or to move up a little bit for a LT so they can replace Terron Armstead (LT being one of the premium Rd 1 draft positions alongside QB, DE, CB & WR) and they fear there could be a mini-run on the RD 1 OT's before they get on the clock at #16 - it's certainly possible a team below New Orleans at #16 trades with HOU at #13 for an OT.
If we assume that New Orleans moves up for a LT instead of a QB, we can use the Baltimore / Buffalo trade-up in the 1st Rd in 2018 as a comparable.
2018 NFL Draft - 1st Rd Trade between Buffalo & Baltimore: Bills trade up 6 spots in Rd 1 to take LB Tremaine Edmunds
BUF Received:
- Pick #16 (Rd 1): 305 pts
- Pick #154 (Rd 5): 12 pts
Total pts: 317 pts
BAL received:
- Pick #22 (Rd 1): 253 pts
- Pick #65 (Rd 3): 78 pts
Total pts: 331 pts
Baltimore received 14 pts of draft "value" by trading down 6 spots from #16 to #22 and picked up an extra Day 2 pick.
Here's the comparable trade in the Vikings trading down 4 spots to #16 this year if the Saints trade up for Cross or Penning:
NO Receives:
- Pick #12 (Rd 1): 347 pts
Total pts: 347 pts
MIN Receives:
- Pick #16 (Rd 1): 305 pts
- Pick #98 (Rd 3): 38 pts
- Pick #161 (Rd 5): 10 pts
Total pts: 353 pts
Minnesota would receive 6 pts of draft "value" by trading down 4 spots to #16 and pick up an extra Day 2 pick, and NO needed to throw in that 5th Rd pick to get the value more even, otherwise the Vikings would be losing draft "value".
The question I'm trying to wrestle with is: if Stingley, Hamilton, Gardner, London, G Wilson and Jermaine Johnson are all off the board at #12 and New Orleans calls about trading up to #12 for Cross or Penning, do I move down to #16 for that extra 3rd Rd pick and if I do, who's left after HOU, BAL & PHI have drafted. If I wanted a CB (like McDuffie), it's possible BAL or PHI take him before I pick. If I wanted a WR like Olave (who's probably the only Rd 1 WR left - I don't consider Burks, Watson or Dotson Rd 1 WR's; maybe J Williams if you like the medicals), will he be there considering it's possible PHI takes him. I guess if I value Andrew Booth Jr highly enough on my board, I could reasonably expect him to be there at #16 and take him, but if McDuffie goes before #16 in a NO trade down scenario, am I Ok w/ the value of Olave and/or Booth at #16 considering the possibility of who's available at those positions on Day 2.
